NOVEMBER
FOUNDATION MONTH

President  David Thorman opened the 16th "virtual meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 3rd of November.  He brought his "Big Bell" with him and rang it loudly to officially start the meeting.

The "pledge" was performed by our esteemed member President David, in lieu of the "Thought designee", who was not at the meeting.

Therefore we did not have an appropriate "Thought for the Day"

ANNOUNCEMENTS

EFFIE YEAW PROJECT -  Habit Restoration will occur on Saturday, November 14 at 9:00 am and about 14 people have signed up to help- so says Dick Bauer. He will contact each person about the event. If any others wish to volunteer, please let Dick know.

FUTURE FUND RAISERS: With the advent of COVID, and perhaps that we will not be able to have a Crab Feed, we need some other way to create funds for our projects. Troy Drennon heads up a committee to find possible other fundraisers. He would like 3 ideas from each member.

So we had an appropriate guest speaker with us (virtually) on Election Day, November 3, Dr. Brian Gladden, who is a Rotarian with the Roseville Club and is the founder of the Strategy & Innovation Institute, Blue Ocean Strategy, a business consultant group.
The idea is to think outside the box and go into a direction that nobody else has thought of, such as the development of Uber and iPhone that made the competition irrelevant . Brian produced in his very nice slide show, a picture of a person on a dock where on the left there is bloody water with sharks and on the right clear blue ocean – which way did she want to go? To the left with the competition or to the right to be alone in the blue ocean
How to avoid a Kodak Moment. As we know, Kodak invented digital photography but the decision was made not to pursue the new technology and so Kodak lost out. “Reimagine the new normal”. An example is given of turning green fairways into Blue Oceans by expanding golf courses into more than golf, adding restaurants, driving ranges, don’t have to bring your own clubs, and 42% who partake are not golfers. See picture (left)
Now Brian turned to Rotary where membership has been stagnant for over a decade and declining in North America. Rotary has had a hard time recruiting new members, the highest percentage leave within the first 18 months of membership. We need more women and minorities. The organization is seen as an old white man’s club and giving dollars are going to other charitable organizations. Brian produced a graph about Rotary in competition with Kiwanis and the Lions Clubs. Some innovative new ideas have been the establishment of Passport Clubs which are less restrictive on members and do not have to represent a particular area within the District, Family and Corporate membership. Then there is the inclusion of Rotaract as members, and aligning with new charitable organizations such as Human Trafficking, Shelter Box and Rise Against Hunger.
So, Brian’s advice to Rotary is to innovate and grow by filling un-met demand, create uncontested market space, changing your mindset by looking past current boundaries. Gain buy-in from key employees and change perspective on who Rotary is to attract new members. President David thanked Brian for his excellent presentation and gained his appreciation by informing him that a book (in his honor) will be presented to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).

HAPPY FINES

We had a rather lackluster "Happy Fines" session, not like we had for the last two meetings with 4X going to Polio +.

Stan Roe 1A-in hopes of getting the election over; Katha Danz 1A -she didn't have to take a drive behind the wheel driver's test; Walter Malhoski 1A- something about the Steelers and telling us again that his daughter is pregnant; Geronimo 1A for the excellence of or speaker. Let's see, 1A=$20, X5= $100.

Donations as of 10-15-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 10-16-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
