JUNE

We  knew this day was coming and it had to be on our THIRTEENTH  “virtual” meeting
of the Carmichael Rotary Club, June 23, 2020, the next to the last meeting of the Rotary Year.
The next meeting on June 30th, President Vicky Boatwright will be ripped away from power
and ignominiously fall into obscurity.
In spite of her impending fate, President Vicky bravely opened the meeting
and recognized esteemed member and Past President Greg Herrera who, after performing the "Pledge",
gave two "Thoughts for the Day":

HONORARY
 SAMSON EGESA

♦ Blood is badly needed: You can go to Vitalent.org to find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....

♦ Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!

►JUNE 30: THE "VIRTUAL" DEMOTION OF PRESIDENT VICKY BOATWIGHT 6:00-8:00 P.M.

Our friend from Uganda, Rotarian Samson Egesa gave us a most interesting program about one of our most successful projects, the Iyolwa Clean Water project. Samson was going to visit us in California in June, 2020, but because of COVID-19, he had to cancel his trip. However, he came to us via Zoom all the way from Uganda (later evening here and very early morning there).
Richard Bauer introduced Samson: Samson has been a Rotarian for eight years and has the classification of Hospitality management services. In this short time he has served in many positions in the Rotary Club of Tororo, Chair of Youth Service, Secretary, and President. He is married with two kids, daughter and son, 7 and a one and a half years respectively. Samson says “Rotary has given me opportunity to do more with my life than I would have ever imagined”
Because I have copies of his slide show, I have produced it below with just a few comments. It is self-explanatory.

President Vicky delighted Samson by informing him that a book, in honor of his presentation, will be donated to our local Carmichael library (subsidiary to the Sacramento Public Library). We hope that, in the near future, when the time is right, that Samson will come visit us so that we can return the hospitality to him that he and members of his Club gave to us when some of us visited over there!

HAPPY FINES

I t was President Vicky who started the "Happy Fines" as sort of a "last gasp" of her Rotary career.  Phil and Katha Danz popped out of the "virtual screen" and BONGED THE GONG in celebration of their 45th wedding Anniversary which is coming up on June 28th!; Troy Drennon announced that his son, James Troy Drennon has turned 4 years old- so he contributed 2A ($50); Mark Urban contributed 1A ($20) because of the the National Day of Luxembourg and he has lineage there ; Greg Herrera gave 1A for Father's Day and that he was overwhelmed playing with Sparky in the pool ; Jack Shearer had Father's Day with daughters, one in Switzerland and one in Vallejo - 1A ; Walter Malhoski had a nice Father's Day with 4 dogs and 6 people and they all got along - 1A ; Frank Pease Zoomed with his new grandchild -his son came over and they had delicious ribs;  Karen Munsterman was nice enough to give 1A, just because; Stan Roe gave 1A because his daughter-in-law and two kids flew in to see him on Father's Day; Jay Boatwright celebrated that he got in close proximity at dinner from or in Lake Port- 1A.

RAFFLE

SO   DOUBLE, DOUBLE DITTO, DITTO, DITTO, FOR 13 WEEKS) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....and the Rotary Year is ending.

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library

Your bulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
  1. Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under the Birch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
  2. Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
  3. Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
  4. Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odyssey of Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
  5. and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this“On the Fly”: Hobo Literature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
