The Meeting

Our President Dick Bauer , welcomed members and guests
to the 4th meeting of  the 3rd quarter of the 2017/2018 Rotary Year.
He turned toward esteemed member Greg Herrera to give the
profound "Thought for the Day".

"After eating an entire bull, a mountain lion felt so good
he started roaring. He kept it up until a hunter came along and shot him"
"The moral: When you're full of bull, keep your mouth shut"

Our Club Comedian Greg Herrera got a nice laugh for his joke:

THREE WACKS

A rich lawyer is pheasant hunting when he shoots a bird and it falls in an adjacent field.
The lawyer sees a very old local yokel standing in the field and asks him to pick up the pheasant .
“Not doin’ that,” says the old man.  “This here is my field, so that’s my bird.”

This infuriates the lawyer.  “Listen you ignorant old man", he says, "I know the law and that bird belongs to me.  If you do not hand it over I’ll sue you!”

The old man replies:
“The law around here says we settle these things with the Three Wack Rule.  I give you three wacks with my stick then you give me three wacks and whoever gives the biggest wacks wins.”

The lawyer is sure that he can wack harder than the old yokel farmer so he agrees.

The old man takes his walking stick and gives the lawyer a terrific wack across the legs, than another across his nose, and a third across the back of his head.
The lawyer has been knocked to his knees but manages to stager to his feet.

“My turn the lawyer says.
“Naaah,” says the old yokel.
“You win.  Keep the darn bird.:

And Badda Boom!

Trip to Cuba - the Boatwrights
Cuba, it's people art and culture
A few months ago, the Boatwrights, Jay and Vicky, travelled to Cuba and spent 8 days there. To my mind, the 1st class fare per person, excluding air fare ($5,500) was not that expensive (although the travel insurance was $880), but you got to be on the cutting edge of seeing Cuba just before it will undergo great transformational changes. It was a tour sponsored by Jay's alma mater Oregon State. They were 21 travelers on a tour bus with a bus driver and 2 tour guides- no cell service or credit – cash only.
Jay and Vicky took us on their journey, day by day, from Havana to Trinidad, seeing old plantations and an organic farm. It was an intensive regimen with many slides and stories. I found that their very interesting presentation is far too extensive for this newsletter to capture all the details, but below is a really incomplete overview with just a few of their pictures.
The Plaza de Revolution - Likeness of Che Rivera - where Fidel Castro would talk for 8 hours straight
Famous El Aljibe Restaurant in Havana - est. 1946
Old buildings not kept up - 3 per day collapse in Havana
Sugar Cane tour conductor gave Vicky the "thumbs up" while wearing his new Oregon State Hat
Old Rotary Plaque - 1990 - looks like a district conference but Rotary left Cuba in 1979
Secret door that Bautista used to escape the Capitol
District Conference - 2018

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of October, 2017, we have purchased over 120 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
