President  Dick Bauer was not physically present for the 2nd meeting of the new 2021-2022 year,(it was a hybrid meeting) but he was present on Zoom (for some unknown reason). After some machinations about who would physically officiate the meeting and because P.P. David Thorman was sick (mild case of covid, he is vaccinated), Past Past President Vicky Boatwright stepped up to handle the meeting. It was too bad that Pres. Bauer was not there physically because an unknown person came up to the podium to offer to give the bell back, but since Dick was not there, he/she ran back and it disappeared. As far as I could tell, there was no "Thought for the Day" but good old George Abraham led us in the "Pledge" and read the "4 Way Test"

We had a guest speaker who has an unusual hobby that we found out about - thanks to a flub by esteemed member George Abraham. George was kayaking down American river when his kayak flipped at El Mante rapids and his phone fell in the river.  His phone was found later by Karl Bly and friends, who dive in the area regularly to retrieve items lost in the river by paddlers and return to owners. With the help of a phone tracking software , George found that his phone was no longer in the water. He called his phone and Karl Bly answered “American River lost and found”.

George got his phone back and learned about this unique service that Karl does in helping to find lost objects in the river, Actually, Karl has found over 128 phones in the river to date. So, George asked Karl to come to the Club and tell us about his exploits."
Karl said that finding objects in the American River has become an obsession with him and he is fortunate to have a best partner, Melody, who lets him get away with it! He is out on the river with his equipment, dive suit and metal detector, almost every day throughout the year. He has found many unusual objects, someone’s prosthetic leg, a drone, wallets, a ten-year old police badge, sun glasses and wedding rings. Over the years, he has been noted on TV for finding a 1950’s piggy bank and sadly has participated in bringing out the bodies of drowning victims. Karl’s hobby is not a business, there is no charge for finding items – he just enjoys what he does. His Facebook page contains many of the “found items” and there is a very interesting history of his exploits. I, think we should glad that we have someone like Karl and his friends who are doing the important business of finding lost items on the American River. Past President Vicky gave Karl a book about Carmichael as a “thank you” for his presentation.

HAPPY THOUGHTS

Past Past President Vicky Boatwright asked for "Happy Thoughts" and volunteered herself to donate $20 because she went camping in a Yurt tent at Coos Bay, Oregon; Stan Roe BONGED THE GONG for his birthday; Bill Baxter put in some because he's been gone for while; Walter Malhoski put in $20 because he just got a "perfect health" diagnosis from Kaiser and our guest Karl Bly said he had just climbed "Half Dome" - what an athlete.

Donations as of 6-15-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
