Mark Mannis, M.D., Chief of Ophthalmology, U.C.D. School of Medicine

MARK MANNIS, M.D., CHIEF OF OPHTHALMOLOGY -U.C.D. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

Along with the presentation by our guest speaker, Mark Mannis, M.D., who is a very distinguished internationally renowned physician, there is a poignant story told to us by our own Chuck McBride who has been a patient of Dr. Mannis for 25 years, and to whom Chuck owes the preservation of his sight. More about this later, but Chuck gave a very detailed summary of the achievements of Dr. Mannis, that I have shortened a bit in the interest of brevity in this bulletin.
Dr. Mannis specialized in corneal surgery and diseases of the external eye. He is a Professor and Chair of the Dept. of Ophthalmology at U.C.Davis, and is medical director of the Sierra Donor Services here in Sacramento. He received his M.D. degree from Univ. of Florida School of Medicine, residency at Washington Univ. in St. Louis and fellowship in cornea and external disease at the Univ. of Iowa. He served for six years as Editor of the journal CORNEA, founding editor of the Pan American Journal of Ophthalmology and has published many papers and is a reviewer of the Archives of Ophthalmology, Cornea, American Journal of Ophthalmology and Contact Lenses. He has also edited and authored  six books. He has received numerous awards and trained many Fellows in Corneal Disease, and approximately 100 residents. His last several years he has contributed to vision care in Latin America, for which he recently received the Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Award by the Academic Senate of U.C.D.
Dr. Mannis started by thanking Chuck McBride for inviting him to speak to the Club. He said that he has been in Sacramento since 1980 and he wanted to tell us what a gem we have in the U.C.D. System. It is a transformational institution, a leader in the field of medicine, looking for new cures and new treatments. It draws from the U.C.D. School of Medicine and also the Veterinary School at Davis and the Primate Center. It does research in all fields.
It provides cutting edge care, research for the world, training of new eye care physicians, has a magnificent medical center and faculty, serves 50,000 patients per year in Sacramento, Folsom and Davis. It includes many different modalities and is in the geographical center of California. They have 16 ophthalmologists, 6 affiliated with the V.A., 9 optometrists and other researchers (PhDs etc).
Dr. Mannis then presented a slide show and talked about ophthalmology world wide. He said that in the U.S. almost all cataract disease is curable. The major cause of blindness in the world is "lack of glasses". The are 17 million people who are blind because of cataracts. In the US, the primary factor in cataract formation is age. Fifty percent at 65 to 75. The lens yellows and becomes opaque. Cataracts can be congenital or acquired. The cure is surgical removal and with a intraocular lens inserted. The cataract is broken  up with a laser and removed. One gets excellent vision.

Glaucoma is the second most frequent cause of blindness world wide. It causes damage to the optic nerve. It causes increase in intraocular pressure. It is silent, symptom-less (ocular hypertension) and causes loss of peripheral vision. Treatment is medical (drops) and surgical - with laser treatment.

Then there is age related Macular Degeneration - 90% occurs over age 75. It will affect 3 million people by 2020. Causative factors include cardiovascular disease and obesity. It causes loss of vision in the Macular area of the retina, or central vision. As it progresses, people can't read. There are two kinds, dry and wet. Dry is caused by an accumulation of debris, and the wet characterized by bleeding.
The treatment is a diet that is high in Omega3 fatty acids, basically the Mediterranean diet. They also can put agents in the eye, and Dr. Mannis showed a slide of an amazing advancement where a small telescope is implanted through the cornea and improves vision - this is used when vision has greatly decreased.
U.C.D. is committed to service to communities all over the world. Dr. Mannis showed us pictures of himself and other Doctors, staff doing  ocular surgery in other countries in a "Flying High Hospital" plane. They go on trips for 10 days and not only benefit patients but help to train local doctors in their techniques!
U.C.D. is famous for many things, including bioengineering. It does more research than UCLA or Stanford.
U.C.D. will soon have a new 65,000 square foot facility devoted fully to vision care! U.C.D.'s mission is to provide excellent patient care, discovery, and to train the next generation of eye care specialists.

Presentation PHF to Dr. Mark Mannis

In the words of Chuck McBride:
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve known Doctor Mannis for 25 years.  I met him when I had a serious eye issue which had been previously diagnosed as hopeless and I would eventually go blind.  I went in search of a second opinion and was referred to Doctor Mannis.  He took me on as his patient and has kept the issue in check all of these years.  A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a growth originating in the nasal cavity and it had invaded the cornea in my right eye.  It needed to be removed immediately to avoid losing my eyesight.  So, you can imagine how indebted I am to Doctor Mannis for his excellent care and concern over these many years.

There are occasions when a Rotarian wishes to recognize someone special for the important role they have played in their life and for the life-changing contributions they have made in the lives of others.  Tonight, I would like to take this opportunity to show my deep appreciation to Doctor Mannis by bestowing him with a Paul Harris Fellow.

To give some background as to the significance of this recognition, I would like Doctor Mannis to know it is named after our Founder Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney who started Rotary in 1905.

Being recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow is one of the most prestigious recognitions awarded by Rotary; and as a Paul Harris Fellow, you join a family of well over 1,000,000 Paul Harris Fellows worldwide and are in the company of such distinguished individuals as Sir Winston Churchill; Charles Lindberg; General Douglas MacArthur; Nelson Mandela; former Presidents John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan; Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin; Walt Disney; Bill Gates; PDG Jim Thompson and Katha and Phil Danz.

As Rotarians, our goal is to create lasting change and we accomplish this with contributions to The Rotary Foundation providing funds to programs which provide food, potable water, health care, immunizations, shelter and educational opportunities for millions of persons.

Doctor Mannis--you have made a significant difference in my life; and throughout your career, it’s obvious you have positively impacted the lives of countless others.  As Rotary’s newest Paul Harris Fellow, I would like to present you with a certificate and lapel pin in appreciation for your numerous contributions and for being such a pioneer in the field of eye diseases.

I hope you will wear your Paul Harris Pin with a GREAT deal of pride knowing that you are part of an exemplary
group of men and women from all parts of the world who are making remarkable changes in the lives of people they may never have the opportunity to meet.

Congratulations and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Abbreviated Bulletins for February 12 and 19, 2019
Preface: Your regular Newsletter Editor Phil Danz was off for two meetings, playing, laughing, eating, and drinking in Puerto Vallarta, (actually Nuevo Vallarta) and so needed someone to take notes. Jay Sedlak stepped up and in spite of having other pressing duties, took the following notes. I am indebted to Jay and I have produced below the unvarnished, non-edited notes of both meetings. For the future, I would appreciate anyone who, from time to time, would volunteer to take notes at our meetings. Let me know - it's actually fun.

Notes:
Our President, Greg Herrera was missing again (Hawaii) and last year.s President and current Vice President Richard Bauer took his place.

Four Way Test: Jim Thompson
Joke for the day: Ed Bunting--read by Dick Bauer
  •  A golfer teed  up his ball on the first tee, took a mighty swing and hit his ball into a clump of trees. He found his ball and saw an opening between two trees he thought he could hit through. taking out his 3-wood, he took another mighty swing: the but hit a tree, bounced back, hit him the forehead and killed him.
  • As he approached the gates of Heaven, St Peter saw him coming and asked. "Are you a good golfer?"
  • To which the man replied: "Got here in two, didn't I?"
Our program for the evening was given by David S Rader, His wife Susan also joined him.
David teaches for academia, business, government, and the military. He served in the United States Air Force from 1967-1971. He taught as an adjunct instructor for numerous colleges and universities (40 years) in several disciplines (History, Political Science, Business, International Studies). He has taught in the United States and abroad and has worked in the securities, real estate, high tech and defense industries. He also offers pubic service lectures on national and global issues.
Tonight's program was on  Theodore Roosevelt Jr.
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was an American statesman, conservationist and writer who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He previously served as the 25th vice president of the United States from March to September 1901 and as the 33rd governor of New York from 1899 to 1900.
Following the program Vicky was invited up to ask us for money. It was reported that we are way behind on raffle and auction items. That being said a number of members reached into their wallets and came out with a credit card.
Following is a list that may or may not be totally accurate but it was coming fast and furious.
Troy D  $100, Karen $100, Doug $100, Rich Shipp $20, Stan ???, Walt ???, Mark Urban ???, Ed $100, Jim Thompson $100 and Rich Plath $100. If I left any one off, too bad. Money was suppose to go to the foundation for the crab feed. Pretty good take for the night.
Raffle--Tony M is still recovering so your truly filled another void. I believe Jane drew the lucky number but don't know the card, but not the Ace of Spades.
Don't know if we have any art.
That's all folks
Jay Sedlak
Editor's note:This shows how the Club responds to need. Wow - 6 BONG GONGERS - I think that is a record for one meeting! All going to help the Crab Feed and our Foundation, Wow!

2/19/2019
Pledge and Thought--Ed Bunting
"There's no room for facts when our minds are occupied by fear."
"Hans Rosling, Factfulness: Ten reasons we're wrong about the world-and why things are better than you think"
Joke--Alan G--sorry I missed it. (Editor's note: Probably did not meet Carmichael Editing Committee's standards anyway)
There was a final crab feed meeting prior to the meeting
Vicky led off the evening with a review of the schedule for the upcoming event. Reiterated that needed all hands on deck and thanked everyone for their help. Looking forward to a great crab feed.
The program for the night was Foundation. Both Rotary International and our own Foundation.
We had four presenters: Dave T, Mark B, Dick Bauer and Vince.
Without all the detail (I have their notes if you want them) here is an overview.
David was first:
David presented the history of our Foundation. First discussed in Sept 2014. Mark drafted the documents and filed with the Sec of State Dec 2015. First they were reviewed by Mark Urban
The first officers, current officers and next terms officers were announced.

Mark B there went into great detail
...A lot of work and research went into creating the foundation. A lot of reporting is required. Extensive laws and regulation govern how the foundation is administered and must be followed. There was the issue that we developed as a small organization--$50,000 or less. The water project was considerable more.
Vince was next with the financials of our foundation.
Vince handed our spreadsheets and reviewed with us.

Ed Bunting was next
...Ed talked about Rotary International Foundation. The importance and need. We have our own Foundation now but we should not forget about International and all the good work they do. Look at the water project and without it there would not have happened. Rotary Int Foundation is rated in the top 10. …
Karen won the raffle but no cigar. No happy fines tonight.

That’s all Folks

Editor's comment: A big thank you to Jay Sedlak for taking excellent notes!

icky Boatwright looked happy to perform her important duty as “Happy Thought Chairman”  and Phil Danz jumped at the chance to say that he much appreciated the presentation by Dr. Mark Mannis, and used to, as an ocularist , attend many of U.C.D.'s symposiums and was always impressed by their excellence, Ed Bunting BONGED THE GONG again for U.C.D.s excellence; Alan Gallaway actually has had or an Anniversary - he was married on Valentine's day - now more than 18 years; Jeff Thompson gave in honor of the kitchen staff he had at the crab feed; Stan Roe gave some to honor they great work that Joe ,the baseball coach, had in controlling the Jesuit kids; Terry Sweeney put in some for the great job that Vicky did; Vicky put in for Jay - must be love - somebody might have RUNG THE BELL, I am not sure; Ed Bunting made statement that Alan Gallaway almost beat him in tennis (with a bad knee), Greg Herrera extolled what a great Club we are and Hamid Ahmadi put in some to thank the Club for a great Crab Feed and finally Walter Malhoski confessed that he only provided olives and Maraschino cherries, sweet and dry vermouth for Phil Danz and David Thorman's martinis, Bill Donnoe did all the work setting up the bar.

I am not going to say that it looked suspicious, but  it seems that speaker Mark Mannis chose the winning ticket which turned out to be Chuck McBride's. Fortunately Chuck only chose the 9 of hearts. If it were to be the Ace of Spades, there would be an investigation!  Didn't see his legitimate bottle of wine from the Club's secret cellar. Must be nearly $800 in the kitty.

Your bulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
  1. Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under the Birch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
  2. Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
  3. Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
  4. Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odyssey of Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
  5. and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this“On the Fly”: Hobo Literature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, June 26, 2018
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
