As the Rotary World turns, a whole new leadership begins all throughout Rotary, from top to bottom on July 1st of every year - an amazing feat! This year we have Rotary International President Holger Knaack of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Molin, Germany - the first German R.I. president ever; Brent Hastey of the Rotary Club of SouthYuba County Sunrise is our new District Governor for District 5180; What is significant for our Club of Carmichael, is that David Thorman, one of our most stalwart members, is our new president for the third time (having been president for one full term, 2013-4, and the 1st quarter term in the year of the famous quartet of Past Presidents (Stan Roe, Vince Iosso, and Jay Boatwright, circa 2015-6. Dave has the distinction of not only following Vicky Boatwright, the first woman president but also being the oldest sitting president in Carmichael's long history. The Rotary International theme for this year is "Rotary Opens Opportunities" and the District's theme is "FFF'n Amazing" where the "F's" stand for Family, Friendship, Foundation.
Details of each of these individuals can be found by clicking on "Read More", bottom right.
President David Thormanstarted his duties on his first Rotary Meeting with Past PresidentVicky Boatwrightat his side, both appropriately masked and David, himself conducted the "pledge".
President David presented P.P. Vicky with her well earned presidential gavel (see photo above) and alsoexpressed his appreciation, that, during our first meeting, we have present a special guest, Leigh-Ann Reniero, our new Assistant Governor.
The Club, under the guidance of Geronimo, produced a slide commemorating President Thorman's birthday and we all sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

The Year Ahead - Club Assembly
David Thorman was officially sworn in by Assistant Governor Leigh-Ann Reniero. He promised to "faithfully execute the duties of his Office".
A.G. Reniero also swore in the new Board members. President Thorman then discussed the plans that he and his Board have made for the new year. He said that, because of the COVID-19 virus, it is unclear as to when we, as a Club, can physically get together to do our projects or perhaps have a crab feed fund raiser, but the good news is that the Club has the reserve resources to fund all of our projects for the upcoming year. Below are the names of the new Board members, also Avenues of Services Chairpersons and topics discussed.
President Thormanasked that the Club think about what special projects that we might do in keeping with our restrictions. Please let him know if you have any suggestions. Someone suggested that we might give away "Rotary Masks" to guest speakers (I'd like to have one). An interesting idea was floated that when we are able to physically be together, that we perhaps start with some Rotarians there physically with masks and appropriately distanced and some attending on Zoom. President Thorman mentioned that some meetings have been handled that way and seem to work out well....
HAPPY FINES
As has been the case in our "Virtual Format", new president David oversaw the "Happy Thoughts" session. As you can see (left), he is depicted in his referee costume. Frank Pease gave one allotment ($20) to the Club as first donation of the new year; the most generous Stan Roe gave one BELL RINGER for his birthday and another GONG BONGER for the Club Foundation, AND another BONG GONG for R.I., $300!; Vicky Boatwright gave 1A to commiserate with new president David; Katha Danz gave 1A to the food bank also for poor David; Vince Iosso BONGED THE GONG for his birthday and directed the $100 to Rotary International Foundation; Geronimo (alias Greg Herrera RANG THE BELL going to the Club in celebration of both Vicky and David and because he had a nice family 4th of July; and finally President David Thorman BONGED THE GONG in appreciation of Stan who bonged the gone twice. A good start for the new year!

EXPLANATION: A BELL RINGER IS SOMEONE WHO DONATES $100 TO THE CLUB IN A GIVEN YEAR; A GONG BONGER IS ONE WHO DONATES AN ADDITIONAL $100 TO EITHER THE CLUB OR R.I. FOUNDATION (FOR GENERAL OR SPECIFIC PURPOSE)
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
