We were happy to be back at our old "digs" at Ancil Hoffman and our present President Greg Herrera opened the meeting and recognized past president Jeff Thompson who, after leading the "Pledge", proceeded with the following thought for the day:
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."

Forsome unknown reason, we did not have a speaker for our meeting today, but not to worry, because there was a sly look that occurred between Greg Herrera and DickBauer and Voila!, a classic video of a Rotary Program entitled “If I Could Be President Again” by Past R.I. President Cliff Dochterman (2001) appeared.
Many of us old time Rotarians have forgotten what a good program that was, with great humor, vitality and surprisingly germane to the issues in the Rotary Clubs of 2018. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Following are some pics of the meeting....

Even though the Cliff Dochterman video went a little long, it seems that people wanted to participate in sharing good thoughts –Vicky Boatwright, sensing that, ordered the “therapy session” to proceed. Immediately heavy hitter Ed Bunting RANG THE BELL in celebration of his father-in-law Don Wangberg’s 84th birthday; Phil Danz was presented with another jacket that was left behind at some events or other (probably one that he worked extremely hard at) and was forced to pay $10 to get it back; Vicky celebrated her daughter’s 29th birthday (can you believe that?); Dick Bauer was ecstatic that his Sacramento Kings have won 5 games here at the beginning of the season; Greg Herrera gave $10 to be able to talk for 10 minutes and show pictures of his new dog, Sparky; Doug Haaland spent the weekend in Pismo Beach and gave a talk at a woman’s club and got good vibes; Walter MalhoskI said something about they took away his port-a-potty and he can get both cars now in the garage; Jay Boatwright was happy that his Oregon State Beavers finally won a game; Aside fromEd’sringing the bell, a whopping $45 was put in Club coffers.

RAFFLE
THERE WAS the usual, official Raffle today with maybe 8 cards left, that's 12.5 % chance of winning over $1000 and it would have been so appropriate if Don Wangberg were to get the Ace of Spades, being that it was his 84th birthday - but alas he got only the 2 of Diamonds. Don feigned a smile and proceeded to tear up the card.
Each year our district says "Thank you" to the clubs and individuals who so generously support our Foundation. Without the selfless donations made by individual Rotarians to support our 6 areas of focus, we could not make the impact in the world we do.
As RI President, Barry Rassin has said, Rotary is a force of nature, constantly shaping the world for the better, something for us to all be proud!
On November 3, I'm excited to share that Rotary International Vice President, John Matthews, will be visiting our district as our keynote speaker at our annual Foundation Awards Dinner! It is rare we have someone who is so beloved and influential come to our district to share in our celebration for those individuals and clubs who keep Rotary in motion by supporting one of the engines that make things happen in Rotary.
This year we will be celebrating and honoring a Rotarian who gave $1M to the foundation last year and we will be entertained by the vocal group 'Auburn Road' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJoVcVvH_V8 as they rise to the top of the country/rock record charts!
There will be Gold Medal winning wine giving out to the best table decorations and our theme this year is 'Holidays Around the World'!
So dress up with the holiday spirit in mind and come to celebrate with YOUR club & district on November 3, 2018.
Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
