We had our fourth “virtual” meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club, April 21st , 2020. President Vicky Boatwright, becoming even more astute at running "virtual meetings", involved esteemed member Geronimo a.k.a. Greg Herrera, who led us in the “pledge” and gave the following thoughts for the day:
EVENTS CHANGED OR POSTPONED OR CANCELED BECAUSE OF THE (COVID-19) PANDEMIC
♦ "RISE AGAINST HUNGER": IS POSTPONED, TO BE ANNOUNCED.
♦ THE CARMICHAEL ANNUAL EASTER SEALS GOLF TOURNAMENT - IS CANCELED
♦ "DISTRICT AWARDS": ARE POSTPONED BUT THE AWARD PACKAGES NEED TO BE IN PLACE. IT WILL POSSIBLY BE A HAWAIIAN THEME BECAUSE THE ROTARIAN CONVENTION WAS CANCELED.
♦ "ROTARY CONVENTION": IN HAWAII - CANCELED
•Blood is badly needed, stocks are down:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward says that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type.
• How to help during this crisis. Now Rotary is recommending Volunteer Surge. You can train to speak to patients and seniors who are just released from the hospital to see how they are doing. This will relieve nurse personnel during this busy time. D.G. Ray Ward also says that there is a 30 hour training program to become a nurses assistant. More soon.
► April 28: (Virtual Meeting) Carmichael Parks - Mike Blondino
► May 5: Historic Sacramento Cemetery - Bob La Pierriere, M.D.
We were fortunate to have Bill Tobin as our fourth “virtual” speaker, who is a brother Rotarian from the nearby Club of El Dorado Hills. Bill is an expert on the “Shelter Box” program, a “Shelter Box” ambassador who visually brought with him many slides outlining the program. Some of them are depicted in this bulletin, however I recommend that you go to http://www.shelterboxusa.org to see all the slides in their entirety.
It is amazing to think that just 20 years ago, the Shelter Box, a millennial idea grew, from the goal of helping just 20 families to the large charity it is today, serving 1.5 million people in distress from disasters – and it is paired with Rotary.
Bill said that the idea was to re-establish families by allowing them to live together under Tents and Tarps. Then came the Indian Tsunami in 2004, and Shelter Boxes started helping the surviving victims, 22,000 families, and was put on the World Stage. Then came another big disaster Katrina, the hurricane that annihilated New Orleans in 2005. Shelter Boxes has been involved most every disaster since then. Just to enumerate, Kashmir, Democratic Republic of Congo, earthquake in Haiti, Tohoko earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Syrian refugee crisis, typhoon Haiyan, Philippines, cyclone Winston, Fiji, Hurricane Harvey in Texas, Irma and Maria in the Caribbean, tsunami in Sulawesi, cyclone Ida, Malawi and helping the people displaced in the area of Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Camaroon in Africa by Boko Haram. (see pictures at end of this article). In 2019 Shelter Box got it's second Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
Bill mentioned that the COVID-19 virus has threatened most displaced people throughout the world. Population density is a problem. Shelter Boxes is helping by:
ENABLING SOCIAL DISTANCING WITH EMERGENCY SHELTER Our tents and shelter items help to move families out of crowded collective centers and into more private spaces where they can limit their exposure to the virus.
IMPROVING ACCESS TO GOOD HYGIENE We are customizing our aid packages in support of good hygiene, supplementing our aid items to include soap and hand-washing basins.
PROMOTING BETTER HEALTH Items like cooking equipment, sleeping mats, and water filters help families stay healthy and reduce the spread of infection during an outbreak.
MODIFYING DISTRIBUTION PRACTICES We have adapted our distribution methods to ensuring we meet the specific COVID-19 recommendations by distributing to smaller groups, encouraging social distancing and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during distributions.
Shelter Boxes has established Hero Clubs which are Rotary Clubs that contribute $1000 per year, Bronze, $3000 Silver, $5,000, Gold. See application at end of article.
As you can imagine, Shelter Boxes tries to amass a large number of boxes in advance of disasters, because when they happen, the need is immediate – being prepared is essential to success.
President Vicky pleased Bill by announcing that a book, in honor of his presentation will be dedicated to the Carmichael library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library)
Vicky Boatwright, for some reason, took over the “Happy Fines”. Chuck McBride had his 18th wedding anniversary on April 20th, Phil Danz’sbirthday and fittingly, he BONGED THE GONG; Geronimo (Greg Herrera) turned 72 also on April 20th, Phil Danz’sbirthday and fittingly RANG THE BELL; Karen Munsterman generously gave her dinner allotment ($20) just because; WalterMalhoski put thanks in for getting masks for nurses (through his nurse daughter) put in $10; Jay Boatwright put in his allotment in honor of their daughter whom he spent some time with recently and enjoyed; Vicky Boatwright put in her allotment ($20) to go to the wonderful charity “Shelter Boxes” andKatha Danz put in Phil’s and her allotments – ditto ($40); Frank Pease – ditto –double allotment ($40) wow!
Chuck McBride talked about the “Change Bucket” that has several hundred dollars in it and mentioned it will be auctioned off to one member to go to their Paul Harris Fellow…..

RAFFLE
SO (DOUBLE DITTO FROM LAST WEEK) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
