The first meeting of 2019 was opened by President Greg Herrera and the baton was immediately given to Karen Munsterman, who provided the following sage advise as our "The Thought for the Day"
"Education is what you get when you read the fine print.
►REPORT ON UGANDA PROJECT: Dick Bauer and Richard Olebehave just returned from their marathon trip to Uganda (over the holidays) to supervise the finishing of the well project. Dick gave a nice slide show of the functioning water spouts and the wells. Their are just a few security things to be done before the absolute final sign off is done by Rotary.
►David Thormanhasreported that some of us have attended a planning meeting to travel to Africa next September and go on Safari and to visit our project in Uganda. Catherine Survillas, Rotarian and expert tour director has put together an exciting package for us. Going in a group would be cost effective and a lot of fun. Let David know if you are interested.

BILL DONNOE - COMPETENCY TESTING FOR GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES
Bill is involved with a family business - it is an unusual and interesting family business, very specialized that does test evaluation of prospective employees for government agencies. The business consists of 6 employees and test almost all agencies such as fire department employees, police, etc.- all over the U.S.
You may ask the question: "Why test?" rather than or in addition to the traditional interview process. The answer is that it is more objective and you get better employees - better performers, you need less time to train them, they make fewer errors, they are less likely to leave, and have fewer injuries. The tests are merit based and cost effective.
For instance, the cost per candidate can be as low as $10 per candidate and goes up from there - perhaps $400 to test a physician.
Bill says that picking an employee is like picking a spouse - do it carefully!
By the way Bill does consulting....his company is Donnoe and Associates (916) 928-4911
As many of you know, Vocational Service is an integral piece of the Rotary landscape. As such, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of service during the month of January.
Vocational Service promotes high ethical standards in business and professions, recognizes the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
As Rotarians, we can put these ideals into action by celebrating someone in the community who exemplifies outstanding professional achievement while maintaining high ethical standards.
A profession which has impacted everyone in this room is Education.
Studies have shown that teachers matter more in a student’s academic performance than any other aspect of schooling. Effective teachers love to teach and have a passion for teaching, they demonstrate a caring attitude, can relate to their students one on one, think outside the box, are willing to be creative and adaptive to individual needs, are proactive rather than reactive, are excellent communicators and challenge their students to do better.
All of us have bragged about a great teacher who impacted us along the way; and tonight, we are delighted to recognize one such individual who has been in education for 26 years.
Our honoree began her career in education at Carmichael Elementary School which is one of 41 elementary schools in the San Juan Unified School District. The school’s roots date back to 1917 when Daniel Carmichael donated ten acres on Sutter Avenue for the sole purpose of education, provided the school bear his name. The school’s mission statement focuses on integrating technology and personalizing instruction to meet the needs of the school’s diverse population. Currently, there are 40 staff and 400 students ranging from K through 5th Grade. The school is under the leadership of Interim Principal Gelika (Gelcia) Harrison and San Juan Unified School District Superintendent Kent Kern.
Tonight, we honor our 2018-19 Excellence in Education recipient--Ann Elmasian.Ann graduated from Sac State in 1979. After dabbling in other occupations, she decided to pursue her first love as that of an elementary school teacher and returned to Sac State in 1992 to earn her teaching credential. Ann has taught at Carmichael Elementary for 26 years at the second, third and fourth-grade levels and currently teaches third grade. For several years, she co-directed the fourth-grade famous Americans’ Wax Museum Project. Ann has been Student Council Advisor and served on the school site council.
Interum President Gelica Harrison came to the podium and said a few words praising Ann's work as a teacher at Carmichael Elementary school and then a plaque was award to Ann with great thanks for her work and contribution to our community. see pics below:

Another valuable "Happy Thought" session was conducted by President-elect Vicky Boatwright, it went as follows:
Stan Roe put in something because he said that Rich Plath worked hard on the Holiday baskets project; Phil Danz was fined $5 for whining that the baskets weighed over 100 lbs what with all the extra canned goods and that he and David Thorman (both 80 years old) had to lug the boxes to and from their car -up and down steps, nobody cares; Vince Iosso thanked Chuck McBride for the teacher recognition program; Walter Malhoski told everyone that he feels great healthwise; Greg Hererra just put in a big $20, for appreciation of Walter Malhoski ; Troy Drennon had a great new year; Mark Beil has had trouble with his leg and foot but now has a diagnosis of neuropathy that make him feel better just knowing what it is and that he is open for anyone to play 9 holes of disc golf in his surrounding yard; Hamid Amahdi liked the program today and appreciates what teachers do for students; Jay Boatwright had a good holiday in Oregon; then an anonymous man who had attended the meeting put some $$ in and said he appreciated our crab feed and was buying tickets; Tim Marquess had a great Christmas, New Year and is looking forward to a great 2019! (an optimist); Don Wangberg said that the Club has great programs; Doug Haaland had a great Christmas with his family in Arizona.

I will appreciate if you can forward this announcement to all of my Rotary Club friends. Also, I am attaching the marketing flyer that is being used by my publisher. If anybody is interested they can use the links below to order the book directly. If any of them wants me to get it for them from the publisher, I can get them as well and give them to you. Thanks
Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
