President David Thorman opened the 8th meeting with a mix of a few stalwart "in person"but  mostly "virtual"members in his own home.

The "pledge" was performed by our esteemed member Katha Danz who also gave the following thought for the day:

"When you talk, you are only repeating
what you already know.
But if you listen, you may learn something new."

ANNOUNCEMENTS
♦ PARTIAL IN PERSON MEETINGS:  President David, is asking if the time might be right to have partial "in house" meetings. Perhaps we can meet at his home and have up to ten persons, all dutifully masked and social distanced. Then, have the rest of the persons attend on Zoom. This "hybrid" meeting might get us back a little bit to normalcy - I volunteered myself and Katha because I know that if you show up at 5 o'clock, you get a free Martini.  President David needs to know if you will attend partial "in person" meetings.

♦ RISE AGAINST HUNGER - see story further down in bulletin in Bulletin.

SAN JUAN FOOD CLOSET UPDATE: Stan Roe

WE NEED A NEW PRESIDENT-ELECT for 2001-2002: It seems that Vince Iosso has let it be known that there is a good chance that he will be moving out of state within the next year. This is sad for us and the Club, but it is best we know of his plans, since we can now start training a new President-elect for next year. Any volunteers?

PLEASE COMPLETE OUR CLUB SURVEY: Ed Bunting has sent each member a survey with questions about your satisfaction and input/ideas to improve our Club's performance. Please complete and send back to him.

It was a special meeting, using the power of Zoom to have Daniel Camps, all the way from the Netherlands, who was an Rotary Exchange student from the Netherlands to Carmichael some 12 years ago.
Daniel gave an informative timeline of his life in a slide and told us about going to one year of high school in America and staying in the homes of 3 host families, one of which was our own members, Jay and Vicky Boatwright.
Above you can see the schematic of Daniel's life, showing 2007-8 being a student at El Camino High School, the earning of his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, and when he married his beautiful wife, Hana, also his beautiful three daughters, Misa, Sara, Vivienne and the "Question mark" is for one that is due in January (WHO I understand is already named Valerie!) Included is the photo of their first home that his family live in. The 2nd home on the time line is one that he is purchasing for his growing family. He has also created his own software company. I think it is safe to say that Daniel has done well.
Daniel critiqued (in a nice way) each of the three families he stayed with: The Boatwrights, Herricks, and the Ruffners. He said that the Boatwrights were "organized and practical, friendly, quickly I (he) felt like he was part of the family, and that they really helped (him), a 17 year old boy get settled on a different continent." Oh and he turned 18 and so they brought him to an Indian Casino, and allowed him to fly a airplane. Daniel said that the long term "take-aways" that he got from his experiences was that he developed an "American" accent in English that has helped him with communications in business; he loved the American people's way of open mindedness and he got to know people (many that had a different perspective on things) that helped him to grow as a person. He said that he made friends that he still communicates with on Facebook and has had a few visitors who have stayed with him in the Netherlands. He ended with saying about his Rotary Exchange experience:
"Hopefully, I can grant to my my own children that same privilege of invaluable life experience that I have received."

Daniel also reported about the Covid-19 experience in the Netherlands. Saying they faced similar challenges as the U.S., but less dire. The pandemic caused a similar response, stay 1.5 meters apart, wash hands with soap regularly, limited use of face mask, work remotely when possible and with a "smart lockdown" gradually becoming less restrictive, follow the science, and with a high level of care and concern for the elderly. He showed statistics that population wise, his country had somewhat less number of deaths proportionately (based on population) than the U.S. Also that they had some protests like we have had but much less....
President David told Daniel the good news that, in honor of his presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library) Daniel's presentation was such a good idea - to have an exchange student from across the world.  We should do another program like this in the future!

HAPPY FINES

Time got a little short at the end of our meeting, but Dick Bauer had time to squeeze in a compliment to our speaker for his great presentation by RINGING THE BELL (virtually $100 goes to the Club's kitty)!

Donations as of 8-22-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 8-4-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
