A TRIP TO ECUADOR - Alan Gallaway

A Trip to Ecuador - Alan Gallaway

We were fortunate to have world traveler and member of our Club, Alan Gallaway to tell us about his latest trip to Ecuador. It was so informative and interesting that your B.E. (Bulletin Editor) decided to just publish his written notes about the trip (with some small editing)....
"Ecuador means equator and it runs right through country.
Quito is Capital of Ecuador, altitude  9350 ft.
Largest city is Guayaquil, where I flew into.
Population over 16 Million with a Democratic government. They use US dollars, the only country besides Panama. Since 2001, this has been a  big advantage for us.
I stayed at a beach town called Salinas, which juts out on a little peninsula.  Climate was cooler that I expected, and temp only varies about 5 degrees from high to low all year round. High was 74 degrees and low 69.  Earlier in year, the highs are 82 and lows 76.  The length of day here only varies by about 15 minutes all year round because it’s so close to   equator.
I found this B and B in Salinas for $50 per night on Travelocity. The trip from Guayaquil to Salinas is about 90 mi and takes almost 2.5 hrs.  The owner of the B and B, Cesar Guillen, found me a driver for $65, where usually a taxi is about $120, I took the red eye flight.  Sacramento to San Francisco to Pato Branco, Brazil to Guayaquil, Ecuador.
I texted Cesar about tennis, and found there was a club about 2 mi from his house.   He found name of a pro, Juan Carlos, and gave me his number.
The Club very nice with 4 hard courts and 4 clay courts. Club charged 10 and 20 with Juan Carlos. I made deal of $40 for the time I was there. Played with Juan 6 times. Because it is so close to equator there, when sun is out which was rare, you make no shadow at noon. Taxis were cheap in Salinas.
Things are relatively cheap. Whole chicken in supermarket was $5.75, $17.50 for a lobster dinner. Breakfast buffet for $6.99.
I hired a taxi to give me a tour. The Malecon is beautiful . Malecon is name given to street that borders the water. No good English translation (Esplanade along a waterfront). We entered an army navy base that used to be American in WW II.  The driver said he was going to take me to the Chocolatera, which means chocolate factory in Spanish. Instead it is the name given to the formation at the end of the peninsula where the water roils up and gives off a brown appearance. There were many interesting rock formations. And a great view of the bay.
The biggest tourist attraction in Ecuador is the Galapagos Islands, famous for the variety of species only found  there.  There are 18 islands that are larger than one square kilometer. Darwin saw these islands and they helped him come up with the theory of evolution by natural selection.
Another interesting place is Cuenca in the highlands.   It has old European architecture.
The day before I left, I went to a Rotary meeting, Great time.  The meeting was in both English and Spanish. We exchanged club banners, and I enjoyed meeting everyone. One of the members managed a condo overlooking the beach, which was 3 bedrooms and rented for $65 per day.
Getting back for my return flight was a project because my flight left at 6:04 Fri morning.  I found a solution. Cesar had another B and B in Guayaquil, and he said He’d get driver to take me there the night before. Rafa, the driver gave me a tour of Guayaquil, but it wasn’t that interesting. I got up at 5 for the return trip to Sacramento."

Your bulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
  1. Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under the Birch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
  2. Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
  3. Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
  4. Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odyssey of Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
  5. and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this“On the Fly”: Hobo Literature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, June 26, 2018
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
