ANNOUNCEMENTS
►RYE Dirtrict ChairDonna Fleshman, came to our Club and reported on the District's Rotary Youth Exchange. She said that because of covid, they have had a virtual program this last year. They have paired off students from different countries for 8 weeks and they meet weekly via Zoom and it has been somewhat successful. RYE will continue virtually for the remainder of 2021 and are prepping to have a full normal inperson exchange of students in 2022. They may keep remnants of the Zoom RYE exchange for special cases where travel is not possible. So they are planning for a 2nd round of virtual exchanges, for 15-17 year olds, who are vetted, counseled, for 8 weeks, and the cost will be $300 per student (that goes to t-shirts, pins and other expenses. Donna says that she has a video to share with anyone and will send it to our Club. If anyone has a possible candidate, let the Club know......
►ROTARY VAN: Our Rotary Van that we (with another Club) donated to the Carmichael Park's District will now be replaced with a smaller van. What to do with the old van. A suggestion is that we could give it to Effie Yeaw Nature Center -details to be worked out.

Programs Chair Katha Danzintroduced our speaker. She is Dr. Marlene von Friederichs-Fitzwater, who has a remarkable record in the health care field in the Sacramento Area and has won many awards and she is also a Rotarian. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Joshua's House Hospice, the first hospice house for terminally ill homeless men and women on the West Coast. It is the ninth such organization in the country and is slated to open in Sacramento in early 2022. The plight of the homeless, which is a growing problem all over the country and in Sacramento has been of interest to Dr. Fitzwater for many years, and especially when her own close grandson, Joshua Lee became homeless and died young in 2014. Dr. Fitzwater gave a detailed slide presentation which I have chosen to include in this bulletin,
because it is informative and illustrative of the subject of homelessness.
Dr. Fitzwater noted that since covid has happened, the Sacramento population of homeless
have increased in a major way over the numbers portrayed above.
Dr. Fitzwater said that there is new training of specialized hospice nurses, doulas, a new program who will take on the needs of the dying homeless persons, 10 of them. Below is information about the Health Communication Research Institute, established in 1989 which Dr. Fitzwater in also the founder and Executive Director. See below:
About HCRI, Inc. Established in 1989 with a commitment to reduce health disparities through community-based research and program development. In 2015, HCRI, Inc. narrowed its focus to better understanding the healthcare needs of the homeless population; developing programs to address those needs; and creating Joshua’s House, a hospice house for the terminally ill homeless.

President Thorman eagerly jumped at the chance of informing Dr. Fitzwater that a book, in her honor,
will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).
HAPPY FINES
President David Thorman, in accordance with the traditions of the Club duly opened perhaps the last "Happy Fines" session of the Rotary year. Jay Boatwright gave 1A, hereafter to be referred to $20, not one meal allowance since we will be starting in-person meetings next week, as did Geronimo and I think Vince Iosso chimed in - all in celebration that our President-Elect Dick Bauer finally has sprung for a new much quieter computer. But it was Ramouna and Heine Roikjer who saved the day with a generous RING OF THE BELL because their son has graduated from high school.

Donations as of 6-15-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman, (2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
