♦ Holiday Baskets: Rich Plath
"We already are working with the San Juan Unified School District for our 2019 program. We enjoy the strong support of the Superintendent, Kent Kern and staff in charge of serving students who need support urgently. Our program is unique in that we serve many student families in our community who need the help the most.
It is important that we get an early count of those in our club who will help with home deliveries and bulk deliveries to the district office for further distribution. We will be doing our home deliveries Wednesday morning, December 18. We need help delivering food baskets to the district, also on Wednesday.
Another important part of our food program is helping assemble the food baskets on Monday, December 16 and Tuesday, December 17. We may be needed to help the district further distribute our baskets on Thursday, December 19.
My request is that each member communicate via e-mail or otherwise how he or she will help the week of December 16-19. An important aspect of our program has been our success recruiting family and friends. We would appreciate a tally of these other helpers as well. It is important to our club's reputation that we have good participation and that we fulfill the commitment we make to the school district.
Thank you.

► OCTOBER 29 - A FUN SOCIAL/OCTOBERFEST EVENT AT 36 HANDLES RESTAURANT IN EL DORADO HILLS ....
THE. program for the evening was a report on the recent trip that the "Gang of Eight" took to Africa from September 1 to 17, 2019. The travelers were Phil & Katha Danz, David Thorman, and Dana Newell, MarkUrban and Terri Friedman, Catherine Survillas and Barbara Riegert (see photo above, the one in the middle is David. our server at Larson Camp)They started with a Kenyan welcoming song "Jambo Bwana" which did not come off very well due to a glitch between the computer and projector. Five of the eight on the trip were there and gave a fairly detailed slide show of 71 slides (although there were at least 2 to 3 thousand pictures taken by all). Each member of the group said something during the slide show. There were also a few videos shown, particularly enjoyable was the Masai warriors who were doing their jumping dance and a video of kids dancing for us at the school that we visited in Kenya, Below are just some of the pictures that were shown:
Above is one of the 5 wells, each one was dug to the depth of 300 feet in order to reach clean water. The right picture shows the protective chain link fence around it. Below is a picture of members of the Tororo Rotary Club, who met Phil, Terri, Daveand Markat a Tororo Restaurant. After lunch they took us a long ways out into the countryside to where the wells are located separated over several miles.
Residents came out to greet us at the wells and we had a meeting with them in which they expressed gratitude for our help in building the wells'
On the well tower, there is a sign commemorating all the Clubs, District 5180 and Rotary International (below)
We were treated to a lovely dinner at a very nice local hotel and after inspecting more wells the next day and more expression of gratitude from the residents, we left them, assured that the wells were doing their job, providing clean fresh water. Below is pictures of the many (35) spigots strategically placed over a wide area. We were happy in the knowledge that the young women and girls did not have to travel long distances (kilometers) in order to carry surface water ( which was not clean) to their homes (as they did before the wells were built). As the residents told us, their health is better and many of the young women can now go to school.
We went on to the Masai Mara Reserve, to the Samburu reserve and to Sweetwater in Kenya and had nearly two weeks on Safari - see many animals, during which we visited a Masai village and and a school, which has been helped greatly by Catherine Survillas's Rotary Club (Elk Grove) pictured below and also just a few of the great types and numbers of animals seen. The great photos of the animals were taken by either Catherine or Barbara Riegertwho had powerful cameras with long lenses.

John Okumo, Tororo Rotarian sent this comment (to your bulletin editor) on the Tororo Water Project:
“Oh yes. This project had two key legs; Raising the required funds and getting the job done on the ground in Uganda. For us in Rotary Club of Tororo, the latter was the easier part, we did it as a team. You members of Rotary club of CARMICHAEL did the bigger job of putting together the required funds. THANK YOU all, for reaching out to the ordinary people of Iyolwa, Tororo. THANK YOU for loving my country Uganda. As Rotary club of Tororo, we will do all it takes to complete this job. This means ensuring its sustainability. I will rally my club members to walk the talk on SUSTAINABILITY. Kind regards to you all who contributed the funds.”
AsChuckems McBride was doing his thing, collecting "Happy Thoughts" and celebrating Polio+ day, procuring donations specifically to eradicate polio in the world, Your bulletin editor, Phil Danz, was in the cloak room dressing up for the Presentation. All who gave donations will remain anonymous because there is no record of them, save that generous Greg Herrera Bonged the Gong.
Chuck, reported to me later that he took in $355.00 and 5 lbs of change - so the Polio+ challenge was a great success. I always knew that Chuck could do something right!

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
