We had our NINTH “virtual” meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club, May 26, 2020. President Vicky Boatwright, recognized esteemed member Walter Malhoski who, after performing the "Pledge", gave the "Thought for the Day" as follows:
♦ In case you didn’t see it, I forwarded a letter to you all from former active (and now honorary member) Judge Jack Shearer, (produced below) in which he mentioned in honor of his 89th birthday this coming August and being a member of our club for more than 50 years, he sent a bong gonger and bell ringer check!! He also sent a $1,000 check to sponsor a PHF award at the club’s choosing. Per my email request, PLEASE SEND ME THE MEMBER YOU VOTE TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD no later than TOMORROW (Wednesday) so we can order the award and present it before the end of June. Jack is now living in Southern California, near his daughter. A BIG THANK YOU to you, Jack, for thinking of us and for your generosity, your long service to our Club, HAPPY BIRTHDAY , and we miss you- President Vicky...
♦ R.E.A.L. These hour-long FREE Saturday online training classes are available for any member to attend, but particularly incoming officers (show Leadership Training for Clubs slide). These are subjects that are usually offered during the District Assembly. You must register ahead of time, so go to the District website and scroll down to see the links to register for each class individually. (The Youth Programs Discussion on 5/23 has been postponed because of the holiday weekend.
♦ Blood is badly needed, stocks are down:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
♦ Since our meetings are on virtual format, Chuck McBride is frustrated and desperate for money for the Club and our charities. There are two ways you can give to him - send a check to Carmichael Rotary Club, P. O. Box 129, Carmichael, CA 95609 or a better way, is to just let Dick Bauer knowthe amount you want to give and he will greatly delight in putting it on your credit card and designate which charity you want: food bank, club, club foundation, polio+etc.
♦ How to help during this crisis. Now Rotary is recommending Volunteer Surge. You can train to speak to patients and seniors who are just released from the hospital to see how they are doing. This will relieve nurse personnel during this busy time. D.G. Ray Ward also says that there is a 30 hour training program to become a nurses assistant. More soon.
♦ Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!
►JUNE 2ND: How the polio system is helping with COVID-19.
Jeff said that he is new to Rotary, only been a member for 3 years (the Point West Club) but he thinks it is an amazing organization. Jeff’ said his passion is in helping “at risk” kids. He has spent the last 2 and ½ decades crisscrossing the globe on projects for people in Zambia, Nicaragua and other countries. Now he has come to our Club to let us know about a youth project called “Camp Hope” located in San Quintin Valley in Baja California, Mexico. This was put together by Reach Baja (Extendiendo a Mano, A.C.) in the Rio Mexico desert (200 miles south of Tijuana), where there is a two lane-highway going down to La Paz. People in the vicinity work in the fields for $2 per day, live in shacks, and teens get married at 14 years of age and have a family at 15 or 16. There, his organization, Reach Baja have purchased 8 and ½ acres and are establishing “Camp Hope”. The idea is to reach to achieve violence reduction, job training, and community development. In short, the project is seeking to systematically change the future of a generation facing absolute poverty. Reach Baja is looking for a grant of $100,000 from Rotary International.
The Reach Baja organization has a 12 year history of projects in the area. More than 95 homes and school classroom facilities have been completed and a 1.5 acre community for families led by single moms, complete with running water and sanitation was completed in 2019. There are 5 full-time staff in residence in San Quintin. The Rotary of Ensenada has completed multiple RI Global grant projects including water projects, solar installations and education projects. The Point West Rotary global grant committee has committed $5000 to the project and is providing oversight.
Jeff told a story on himself, that he came from a very poor family and became the first of his 40 relatives to graduate from college. He said that all around the world, the young are looking to America to see what’s cool. Some of the best representatives are Rotoractors. Jeff will be bringing student youth groups down to Camp Hope to help out in projects there and they are good examples to the young people.
Jeff tells the story of a young woman, who was sold off by her family to prostitution and was abused by an older man, the father of her children. Now she has been helped by turning their family around. You need to get to them by the age of 14 and mentor them to go in a different direction.
Now President Vicky put out a heartfelt thanks to Jeff's Club (the Point West Club) for their contribution of $2000 to our Uganda Water Project, a while back, that helped our project immensely. Then, she quickly impressed Jeff by announcing that, in his honor, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
P.S.: In the Q and A there came an offer from Richard Olebe and David Thorman to help Jeff in any way with their proposed grant from R.I., since they had worked successfully on our $200,000 water project in Uganda and can share their experiences.
v icky Boatwright conducted the "Happy Fines", but first Chuck McBride had something to say: he is closing out the "change bucket" for Polio+ and this is the last meeting that you will have the opportunity to give, there will be no more groveling, begging you for change. One of the donors to the "change bucket" will be chosen and there will be close to $1000 in the bucket - do give, on last time. Chuck will still beg for blood donations.
Now since we are "virtual" and not spending $20 for dinner every Tuesday, won't you just give that allotment to the food bank, the Club, or other charity? Karen Munsterman said yes and gave 1 A (allotment) to polio+, just for the heck of it; Dennis Moffett, all the way from Denver or somewhere gave 1 A, Stan Roe gave 1 A all the way from Donner Lake; Vinne Iosso said "put me down" for 1 A to polio+; Frank Pease, 1A, polio+; David Thorman, 2 A, $40, polio+; Dick Bauer, 1 A, because his daughter and family was with him over the weekend; Geronimo (Greg Hererra) was sad that a friend of his, the Dean of Magic, passed away of COVID-19 virus - so he BONGED THE GONG to polio+; Chuck McBride gave 1 A to polio+; Vicky Boatwright, ditto because she had family fun in Yountville, placed flags, spent the night and the boy friend got a negative COVID-19 test and Phil and Katha Danz gave 2A to polio+(a generous couple).

RAFFLE
SO (DOUBLE DITTO DITTO FROM LAST WEEK) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
