Rotary International Foundation Night
It was a Gala Evening!
The Bunting Family prepares to receive Paul Harris Fellow Awards
Paul Harris Fellow Night Dinner

Club Foundation Chair Chuck McBride opened the meeting held at the North Ridge Country Club at 6:30 p.m. by welcoming everyone to the special dinner recognizing current Paul Harris Fellows and honoring the club’s newest Paul Harris Fellows.
Chuck called upon newest member Jane Lampard to lead us in the pledge, Doug Haaland to provide the Thought for the Day. It was an appropriate one by Arch Klumph :
"The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds.....we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity."
Former member and Immediate Past President John Mangels also provided the invocation.
Chuck introduced District luminaries: District Sandi Sava; PDG Jim Thompson; PDG Barry Kalar; DGE Jack Arney and wife, Maureen; Chief of Staff Mo McBride; Assistant District Governor Desiree Wilson and Carmichael Rotary President Dick Bauer and wife, Kari.  We had 54 attendees including Rotarians, spouses, other family members and several Sacramento Breakfast Rotarians.

Following dinner, Chuck called the meeting back to order and asked Carmichael Rotarian and PDG Jim Thompson to give his thoughts about what it means to be named a Paul Harris Fellow.

Chuck then asked his wife and District Chief of Staff Mo to give a brief overview of the Rotary Foundation.  Before Mo could begin her remarks, the audience broke into song.  It was Mo’s birthday and so she was serenaded with Happy Birthday.  It’s a birthday she won’t soon forget.
Chuck with the help of Mo presented new PHF pins to those members who had gone to the next level of recognition.  They were as follows:

George Abraham – PHF+2
Dick Bauer – PHF+5
Mark Beil – PHF+1
Vicky Boatwright – PHF+4
Alan Gallaway – PHF+2
Doug Haaland - PHF
Greg Herrera - PHF
Jane Lampard - PHF
Richard Olebe - PHF
Rich Plath – PHF+1
Stan Roe – PHF+3
Jeff Thompson - PHF+2
Dave Thorman – PHF+1

Chuck then asked PDG Barry Kalar and Mo to help make presentations to those non-Rotarians being name a Paul Harris Fellow or who went to the next level of recognition.
Ed Bunting’s family:  wife, Jenny; son, Jeremy; daughter-in-law, Jenny; daughter, Candice Smith; son-in-Law, Shane Smith; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Smith (who stole the show.)  Other Bunting family members who were awarded Paul Harris Fellows but could not attend the dinner were:  daughter, Lauren Harris; son-in-law, Rob Harris; daughter, Megan Turvey; son-in-law, Luke Turvey; mom, Lois Davy and father-in-law, Don Wangberg.

Other Rotarians’ family members:
Julie Abraham
Kari and Trevor Bauer
Carol Beil
Katha Danz (PHF +1)
Tracey and Vincent Iosso
Debby Plath
Nan Roe
Dana Newell

The next recognition went to former member and Immediate Past President John Mangels for his service to the Carmichael Rotary Club.
Newlyweds Jane Lampard and Doug Haaland were honored by several friends including Vicky and Jay Boatwright.
DG Sandi Sava assisted by ADG Desiree Wilson gave special recognition to Dick and Kari Bauer and Ed Bunting who became members of the prestigious Bequest Society.  Continuing with special recognitions, Vicky and Jay Boatwright were recognized as Major Donors.
This year Chuck asked for nominations from the club’s Paul Harris Fellows to name someone they felt epitomized Rotary’s motto Service Above Self and who contributed the most to the club’s success this year.  The presentation took on a life of its own.  It was a parody on last year’s mis-step by the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse at Academy Awards.  Chuck asked for the “envelope” and announced the winner -- Jeff Thompson.
President Dick Bauer then took to the podium and announced his choice for the Presidential Paul Harris fellow – Richard Olebe
The evening concluded with two special non-Foundation presentations by District Governor Sandi Sava.  She announced that PDG Jim Thompson was voted into the District’s Hall of Fame and Richard Olebe was named Rookie of the Year.  Both awards were announced at this year’s District Conference at Incline Village in Lake Tahoe.

Before adjourning the meeting, Chuck thanked Ed Bunting for arranging for the club to hold this special event at the North Ridge C.C. which would not have been possible without his help.  Chuck thanked everyone for their participation and asked them to stand and join him in a toast to Rotary Around the World.
(notes for this meeting were provided by Mo Browning-McBride)
A big "thank you" to Chuck and Mo McBride who put together and officiated a great Foundation night!

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of April 10, 2017, we have purchased nearly 150 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
