Getting to Know Him - Stan Roe, M.D.
Stan was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1945 in a family with 4 sisters and one brother. His Dad had polio as a young boy which left him with both legs paralyzed. Growing up,  Stan saw daily what a terrible disease polio can be. Stan says that’s why Polio+ has a special significance for him.
He went to the University of Michigan and eventually is married to his wife, Nan of 53 years so far. They have 4 children and 7 grandchildren spread out from San Diego, California to Portland, Oregon.
Stan interned at U.C.D. and joined the Air Force as a flight surgeon. He wanted to be stationed in Europe but had to accept serving in Guam. He was attached to a B-52 squadron in the Strategic Air Command. Every month he was compelled to go on a combat mission over Vietnam.
After his military service, he and Nan moved to California and he accomplished his residency in Anesthesiology at U.C.D. and practiced at Mercy General Hospital for 20 years and 23 years at the Sutter Anesthesia Group (42 years in all) He is familiar with using fentanyl (appropriately) in his practice.
In 1997, Stan travelled on a medical mission with San Francisco Rotarians to Chile and became interested in becoming a Rotarian. He found the Carmichael Rotary Club and joined it. Stan is proud of the fact that he will travel to Luxembourg in March to become a dual citizen of Luxembourg and the U.S. He is doing this partly to keep the opportunity that his children could also become dual citizens in the future. So far, only his sons want to become Luxembourg citizens. Mark Urban is already a dual citizen with Luxembourg.

Question: What does one do after retirement as a gynecologist? Answer: One immerses oneself into all kinds of interesting and bizarre facts to give a presentation to a Rotary Club. This is what Greg Herrera, M.D. (A.K.A. Geronimo) did on January 11th, 2022 at the 76 Kitchen Restaurant. We were blitzed with slides of all kinds of fun information. In the interest of time and space for this bulletin, I have chosen just a few interesting facts from his excellent presentation.
So below is the pictorial story of Major General Dan Sickles, who was born in 1825 and died May 3rd, 1914, and is a direct ancestor of Geronimo. His mother is Dorothy Sickles Herrera, great granddaughter of General Sickles. He was an American politician, diplomat, soldier, and is remembered for acquiring the land for  Central Park in New York City. He also fought in the Civil War where he lost a leg in combat at the battle of Gettysburg. He is also known for being the first person to ever get off a murder charge using the "temporary insanity plea". He killed U.S. District Attorney Philip Barton Key (son of Francis Scott Key) following his wife's confession the previous day of her protracted adultery with Mr. Key. Below is a picture of General Sickles broken leg, and also some books written about him calling him a "scoundrel" - he was nicknamed "Devil Dan".
Then there is the old adage "It will cost you an arm and a leg"? Well, before there were photographs, people were remembered in paintings. If the painter were to be employed to show an arm and a leg, it would cost you much more. Below are three paintings of Napoleon, where in a good time, you saw an arm and a leg. In a lessor time the hand was partially hidden and when Napoleon went to exile, he had his arms behind his back.
Then there is my favorite: "To be saved by the bell". Most people think that this saying originated with a knocked down fighter who was "saved by the bell" which ended the boxing round by the bell, ending the round. But there is another explanation. During the 17th century, people would go into a coma or become unconscious for some reason and be pronounced dead and be buried in their casket and then wake up and be trapped - a horrible event. Bells were placed inside the casket so that if the individual should wake up, he/she could ring the bell and the graveyard caretaker could hear it and thus the person would be "saved by the bell". If the bell didn't ring, the corpse would be considered a "dead ringer". Incidentally, you know that the Irish did hold a "Wake" when someone dies and the person would lay there while relatives watched to make sure he/she didn't wake up and was truly dead. (now we have "woke", but that's another story- your B.E.'s comment).
There were many more hilarious and interesting slides (actually over 160 in all), but you'll have to invite Geronimo over to your house to see them, or read the book when it comes out or have him back for an update.  Geronimo just had to include his dog "Sparky" in the presentation. Glad to see he is doing well....

HAPPY THOUGHTS

On the second meeting of the new year, January 11th, 2022, experienced "Happy Thoughts" conductor Vicky Boatwright assumed her position again, a comfortable one, as leader of extracting Happy Thoughts: Phil Danz gave one allotment, $20, for Geronimo and Stan's presentations; Ramouna Roikjer gave $100.00 - and BONGED THE GONG; Jay Boatwright gave an allotment because although he is officially retired, he has been appointed to the Division II Sacramento Suburban Water District Board (sounds important!); Geronimo celebrated that he finally got to present his talk about sayings and trivia - it was cathartic!

so he generously gave the wine to Phil Danz,
who was just one digit off from the winning ticket - it was appreciated!

Donations as of 10-20-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (NEARING 400), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
