Baby Arthur Stryder, my husband Jacob and I would like to extend our deepest appreciation to you both, the Rotary club and all members and associates, partners and volunteers at Rotary and UC Davis for providing us the opportunity to stay in the Rotary house. It is so thoughtful and the kindness is beyond words. Please extend our gratitude and love to all involved in making this beautiful project that aids those in need while going through difficult times.
We have been incredibly focused on getting baby Arthur well, as we are told that Arthur's health condition is extremely rare and may require surgeries and care that is one of a kind,. We will keep you updated of Arthur's progress here at UC DAVIS medical center. We look forward to seeing and will share the link to the news story involving the Rotary house and our story which I am told will be posted on the UC Davis website soon.
Again please share our appreciation and love to all involved. Please feel free to share the attached photo of Arthur who continues to be the happiest, most wonderful boy who makes this all worth it.

SEPTEMBER 14: AEROJET WATER CONTAMINATION- ALEX MACDONALD
Wehad the great pleasure today to receive a presentation from our newest member, Kari Bauer. It is on a subject that is close to her heart, namely Climate change. The name of the title being more specifically “Climate Reality”. Kari mentioned that recently Rotary has recognized lately the "Environment" as a 7th area of service - that shows how important this topic is. She gave an informative slide show, taken from the "Climate Reality Project"(see title above). It was very detailed and revealed how small and fragile our atmosphere is - just a thin blue line around the earth. As many know, and science confirms, there is a build up of green house gases warming up the atmosphere. These gases come from various sources, from the permafrost which is deteriorating and releasing methane which is much more powerful warming agent that carbon dioxide.
Kari says the biggest problem is the burning of fossil fuel. Kari showed various graphs which proved her point. She showed that in Phoenix, France, and Ghana, the temperature has reached over 120 degrees. There is ice melting in Greenland and for the first time, it is raining there. The sea level is rising and large areas of New York are now in flood zones. Scientists believe that 93 percent of the extra heat trapped is manmade. Hurricanes in the southern areas of the U.S., like Alabama is getting more powerful. The term “Historic Rain” is being used more and more each year. It hurts agriculture. Hurricanes are more powerful in India. Then there are long droughts, the groundwater sinks and Kari showed the snow pack is gone around Lake Oroville, and Shasta, the snow is gone. Now, in our hotter years, we have more forest fires. It disproportionately hurts poor people. There is more disease and some areas have lost 50 percent of small land-based species.
So is there some good news? Well yes, solar is doing better and there is now better storage of electricity, there are some reasons to be hopeful for the future. Electric cars are becoming more numerous, and renewable energy sources are being established. Kariis proud of SMUD which has a zero-carbon program. Kari recommends that you use your vote for implementing policies to lessen the bad effects of Climate change.
Your world depends on it.
Now Kari opened the discussion to the question: What can we do individually to lessen carbon emissions? The audience came up with some ideas. Buy local so the food does not have to be transported a long ways – burning fossil fuel, buy less meat and dairy – less red meat for your health and for the climate, use less plastic, more made in the USA (because of transportation), buy less, buy biodegradable things, and a few members suggested increasing support for nuclear power which is much safer than it used to be and technology is closer to having fusion plants.
President Dick, a generous man, informed Kari, that a book will be donated, in honor of her excellent presentation, to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).

Donations as of 8-5-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman, (2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
