We have an opportunity to join with others to help with Effie Yeaw's Habitat Restoration native planting
project to dig holes, install cages, mulch and plant native plants on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Vicky Boatwright sent 'round a sign-up sheet - it will be a nice, easy, and rewarding couple of hours.
Let her know if you are interested.

HANDS ON PROJECTS The Board has expressed an interest in having more "hands on" projects and Vicky has a spate of possible not too difficult projects available -like help plant a few plants at Carmichael Park, assist in the library at the Carmichael School and participate in their event. November 15-18, 8:30-200 pm.  Also,  to partner with other Clubs such as Kiwanis, Lions, and Shreiners. Our friend Sharon Ruffner is now president of the Carmichael Kiwanis Club and they have a project to assemble food packets for a couple of hours. Let Vicky know if you are interested in volunteering. It also is a great way to get potential new members involved.

Richard Olebe, GETTING TO KNOW HIM

Richard’s parents were farmers in Uganda, where he was born in 1945. He had five brothers and six sisters. He was smart enough to qualify to attend boarding schools in Uganda before going to the University of Nairobi in Kenya. He met his wife, Margaret, while she was teaching as a Peace Corp volunteer in Uganda. They were married in Nairobi and his two sons were born in Nairobi – it worked out that they have been married 49 years. He moved to the U.S. and went to graduate school at Stanford University. He earned a master’s degree in engineering and worked for six years for a construction company in Minneapolis where he was a Project Engineer on a tunnel project in North Dakota. Then he owned a construction company for 10 years in Sacramento. His company-built levees, roads and bridges. Moving on, he worked for the California Department of Water Resources for 22 years building concrete and earthen dams. He retired in 2014. He joined Rotary in 2016, after having been brought to Rotary by his neighbor, Dick Bauer.
What Richard was too modest to say is that he pioneered one of the greatest projects that Carmichael Rotary has ever accomplished (from 2017-2019), building water wells to provide clean water for 10,000 people in his old neighborhood in Uganda. He worked tirelessly getting funds from other Clubs and with his Club’s help obtained over $200,000 to finish the project ($50,000 from District 5180 Clubs, and matching grants from District 5180 and Rotary International –to  make up the $200,000. He is president-elect of our Club and a real superhero!

Getting to Know Him - Greg Herrera (Geronimo)
I am a native Sacramento Boy.  I was born at Sutter Memorial Hospital in 1948 and was raised in the Arden-Arcade area.  Went to a variety of grammar schools (because district boundaries were changing):  Arden Church, Winterstein, Greer, Edison, and Jonas Salk for “junior high.” It seemed that in grade school, I was always “the new kid” in school and accordingly forced to develop social skills to cope. Encina High School was my school. All of these schools are now all are serving different educational needs.

My father owed a salvage business (used machinery and equipment) where I learned welding, mechanical skills, and built my first motorcycle at age 15.  After school and weekends were spent working at dad’s shop.  Summers were spent working in construction, the salvage business, and working in warehouses in the then “embarcadero” or what is now “Old Sacramento."

I went to American River College (then American River Junior College), followed by UC Davis, Graduate School in Marine Biology, worked as a Marine biologist at the Bodega Bay Marine Lab. While at Bodega Bay I looked into a career change and applied to the California Highway Patrol, the State Fish and Game and Medical School.  Because my eyes were not 20/20 the HWY Patrol rejected me, Fish and game wanted me to be a research biologist and I was already doing that…so off to medical school at UCLA.  Surgery training and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology was at the University of Pittsburgh, where I became an avid life long Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates fan.

Along the way I learned SCUBA diving, became a Diving Instructor hold a  “Master Diver” certificate. Trout fishing, backpacking, surfing, waterskiing, baseball, and Martial Arts (I have black belts in both Judo and Kenpo Karate).

Recently retired from Kaiser Permanente after nearly 35 years of practice…I have delivered over 2000 babies (I stopped counting at 2000).  I miss my patients, the practice of medicine, and my professional colleagues, but I enjoy all the extra time with my wife, kids (ages 44, 42, 31) and two grandkids (now 5 and 9).  Time in Hawaii, and fishing Montana are pastimes.

I enjoy the Carmichael Rotary and was chairman of their crab feed, and was a past president 2018.

EFFIE YEAW NATURE CENTER JOINT PROJECT
On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, a stalwart band of Kiwanians and Rotarians, showed up at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center and helped with some "hands on" projects. Namely, the sanding, staining and painting of the Kiosk at the entrance to the center (above), the removal of curb-side soil at the entrance (below) and the painting of a fence (not shown). Sharon Ruffner, President of the Carmichael Kiwanis Club was there along with 5 or so members, and Carmichael Rotarians, Dick and Kari Bauer, Richard Olebe, Phil Danz, David Thorman, and Jay Boatwright participated

BIRD SONGS - RICHARD HOWARD
Have you ever wanted to identify the sounds that come from birds in your back yard. I've been curious about the species of birds in my environment for years. We are fortunate today to have an expert who will identify those bird songs for us. : Rich Howard is a native Californian and 30+-year Carmichael resident whose love of birds and nature has taken him to all seven continents. After retiring as an environmental scientist in 2013, he visited Effie Yeaw Nature Center nearly every week until the pandemic hit. He offers classes for adults at Effie Yeaw in Beginning Birding and in a bird watcher’s website and app called eBird.
His presentation introduced the songs and calls of some Carmichael birds and discusses the general subject of bird vocalizations. The purpose is to give residents an appreciation of the sounds that are all around us but may not have been noticed, and to enhance the enjoyment of the common yet extraordinary creatures that share our environment. RHowardA@gmail.com

Above: Richard gave the sources of the information to be presented. Below: How birds are identified and voice recreated by spectrograms.
He also produced pictures of many birds along with their sounds.

We got to hear the songs of an array of local birds. The Yellow-billed Magpie, American Crow, Anna's Hummingbird, Oak Titmouse, Mallard Duck, Canada Goose, Mourning Dove, Bushtit, California Scrub Jay and the Northern Mockingbird.
Above is a photo of the interesting grouping of the European Starling as they fly in flocks, mimicking what we see in schools of fishes.

If you want to see a very interesting website that shows species of birds around the world together with recordings of their sounds

HAPPY THOUGHTS

On October 5th, Phil Danz was happy that the Giants won the National League West; Katha Danz celebrated getting a large shed on her side yard for storage, Mark Beil informed us that his family had immigrants from the 1730's who were indentured servants (sort of like slaves), Stan Roe told us that one of his relatives way back in the past was hanged as a criminal; Heine Roikjer made the announcement that he would donate wine as drawing prizes for the Club (what a good guy....)

Donations as of 10-20-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (NEARING 400), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
