must give up a share of liberty

to preserve the rest.”

THE CARMICHAEL CLUB HAS FOUND A NEW MEETING LOCATION
We meet at the Stage 76 Kitchen and Bar at 7600 Fair Oaks Blvd., near the Manzanita split, located at the corner of Fair Oaks Blvd  and  Wayside Lane. For those who have been in the Club awhile, we used to meet at this restaurant when it was called the Capri.

Community service - Vicky Boatwright:
  • Unfortunately, Effie Yeaw has cancelled the Habitat Restoration February 26 workday.  Hopefully they will have another one soon.  They are supposed to let me know which ones will be a "go", so stand by.
  • Mission Oaks Recreation & Park District (serving the Arden Arcade area) have decided they will not be having a pancake breakfast and since the event is very small and doesn't require a lot of volunteers, will not need our help at their Easter Blast on 4/16.
  • Mission Oaks Park District still would like us to participate in their Kids Summer Carnival on 5/21 (see attached flyer).  They would like us to have a Rotary table to promote our club and Rotary in general, which I think we can/should do.  They will let us know what else we can help with when the time is closer - they are still in the early planning stages.
  • Here's the NEW opportunity:  We have reserved Saturday, March 12, for food sorting and bagging food at the Sacramento Food Bank.  Timing is 10 am to 2 pm (no children under 10 years old are allowed to participate, unfortunately).  As I mentioned before, Jay and I have done this a couple times in the past and it was really interesting and fun!  The signup sheet I passed around at our last meeting has 11 people on it already:  me, Katha & Phil, Paul, Troy & his dad, Walt +1, Frank +1, and Stan.  Want to join us?  Just reply to me and I'll put you on the list.  More details to follow.
I'm also working with Carmichael Elementary to see what else we can do for them, and I am staying in touch with the Carmichael Park District regarding help they can use.  Do you have a suggestion of a community partner or project you think would be good for our club?  If so, let's talk about it!!

Have a great weekend.

Cheers,
Vicky

HAPPY THOUGHTS

Now the "Happy Thoughts" were as follows: Stan Roe put a donation in order to tell us that he spent the weekend in Portland and saw rain and snow; Mark Beil also donated to tell us that he has renovated his disc golf course for legitimate "premium play"; Dick Bauer went to Monterey and saw his granddaughter in the play "The Bird that Flies" and she played a convincing sociopath!; Ed Bunting GONGED THE BONG because he is taking his granddaughter to Disneyland for her birthday; George Abraham spent a weekend at Capitola and reported the good news that the butterflies are back in large numbers; Our newest member Paul DeGuerre mentioned that his daughter, who lives in Australia, recently had a baby - Paul wife is leaving to spend a month helping out.

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Greg Freeman, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
gregfreeman@saclibrary.org

Over the past eight years, nearly 500 books have been donated to the Carmichael Public Library. We show only the latest donated books with the names of the Guest Speakers.
