 ► FUND RAISER:
Dick Bauer gave out the following flyer (below the links) detailing our newest and perhaps our only fund raiser this year. Please invite your friends and all the ones that you would invite to the Crab Feed to partake in the fund raiser. Jay and Vicky Boatwright have already tasted the dinner and have given their stamp of approval. Right now we have 47 sets or 188 dinners sold (each set is $90) is for 4 dinners - what a deal! Use PayPal as link below, or send to address on flyer, or send directly to our Foundation treasurer, Katha Danz.
  Live links are as follows:

TWO NEW PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS were awarded by Chuck McBride on video and shown to all in our last meeting, one to PDG Jim Thompson (+6) and one to Vicky Boatwright (+8), tech director Geronimo had one other award to a mystery recipient that will be announced (and show) at the next meeting.

► ROTARY SHIRTS, HATS, CAPS : Vicky Boatwright is harboring many of these items which belong to members and they are just collecting dust at her home. She would like you to come get them or she will meet with you and deliver them or better yet, she will be at the parking lot at the Jackson Eatery on March 27th, 4:30-5:30 p.m. and will have them with her and you can get them then.

►OAK PARK ROTARY HOUSE:  As you may know, our Club recently donated $750 to the Oak Park Rotary House. Lynette Andersen came to our Club  (virtually) and told us of the wonderful function of the house, that is, to give a child who is going through prolonged treatment at Shriner's Hospital, a free place for the family and child to stay. It keeps families (who live far away) together during a very difficult time. Some stays have been for a year or more. It is a wonderful project and we are being asked to help with the upkeep of the house on special "work days". There are 7 other Clubs involved and they share in the maintenance work. Since we are now involved in the project, would you consider spending an hour of so helping with some yard work with other Rotarians? See informational story below:
►EASTER SEALS GOLF TOURNAMENT:  Jay Sedlak said that the Easter Seals Carmichael Golf Tournament is slated to be on June 11th, and we will have our “Golf Assembly Meeting” on June 8th,  and wanted to know how many want to participate, $175 for one individual golf cart, prizes, lunch, raffle and shotgun 18 holes at Ancil Hoffman. Some have mentioned that if the carts are full, they would like to walk the course
(not me!).

►CARMICHAEL PARK DISTRICT:  Have completed two Bocci Ball courts in their park and word has it, that the Carmichael Park staff is challenging the Carmichael Rotary Club to a match on the courts when it can be safely done (maybe we start practicing A.S.A.P.!)

GLOBAL GIVING
Mark Urban introduced Christine Dyer, who is the current International Service Chair for  District 5180. He said that Christine has an independent consulting company, a husband and three teenage sons. She is a member of the Roseville Club (joining in 2016) and has traveled to Haiti, Dominican Republic, Honduras and Mexico on Rotary International projects.
Christine thanked our Club and Mark for inviting her to speak and said that the topic for today was Global Giving. She said that she had with us (virtually) through the power of the internet, Moika, Vega, and Rena, from Honduras, and are part of the SELF (Sustainability Empowerment Leadership Foundation) who work with underserved communities in Honduras.
First Christine showed a short video of what District 5180 is doing in the realm of International Service saying that there are 37 Clubs involved with 6 areas of focus, 8 DISC Team members, 22 Global grants in 17 countries. She outlined some of the various projects such as Peace and Conflict Resolution in Africa and Mexico, arsenic poisoning in Nicaragua, helping small businesses in Bangladesh, Literacy and Basic Education in South Africa and their newest focus on supporting the environment. The projects which are most important are the clean water projects, which impact all others. The District needs to have more Global Grants and encourage the 3-1 bang for your buck effect. It is encouraged that all the Clubs in the District be involved in at least one District wide grant.
Christine then produced a PowerPoint slide show about three water projects in Honduras with the aid of Moika, Vegas and Rena,(who are part of SELF) in Honduras to explain the details about the project.
The timeline of the Grants is produced in a slide (left) and showed how quickly they were accomplished. The 3rd project was held up by COVID-19, but water is brought from a dam in the mountains which through gravity, brings water to storage tanks in the low lands and then is purified (if need be) and distributed by pumping to various villages.
A detailed description of what was done was provided by Moika, far too detailed to put in this bulletin. Christine said that it is important to have the aid of a NGO, working with local people - that love is expressed not in a language difference but how you speak to one another - by not being condescending, not talking down to them. President Thorman quickly surprised Christine by announcing that, in honor of her presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library. (further slides are below)

HAPPY FINES
So the fines started out slowly with Heine Roikjer generously giving $50 so that he could announce that his store will be closed on Easter Sunday; then Vicky Boatwright announced that her daughter Corrine got engaged, Jay Boatwright also announced that his daughter Corrine also got engaged - they both deposited 1A, Frank Pease tried to upscale the announcements by telling us that his daughter was pregnant for the 2nd time; and P.D.G. Jim Thompson both RANG THE BELL and BONGED THE GONG because he received a Paul Harris Fellow from the Club - wow!; and then there was Alan Gallaway who meekly gave 1A, celebrating that he was alert enough to get to the meeting ontime.

Donations as of 2-14-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (nearing 300), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
