♦Later Dick sent around sign up sheet for those who want to physically help out for few hours with the project (painting walls etc.) Let him know if you want to volunteer to do some light work for a few hours on November 2nd and 3rd.
♦ R.I. EXCHANGE STUDENT - The Fair Oaks Club is hosting a Rotary Exchange student from Sweden and Maggie Hoy is wondering if anyone might host her from November to March. If so, let her or Vicky know....

Are there any volunteers to work on the club display for the district conference?
♦ Rotary International Convention is June 6-10 in Honolulu. You can register at http://www.riconvention.org .
♦ Chuck McBride talked about "Matching points to dollars" for PHF - up to $300, you should look into your standing
and that members need to vote for Club PHF to be given to one outstanding member, more voters make the Award more significant...
AND he introduced a coin jar which we can deposit our coins for Polio+ mentioning that we are so close - only 12 cases of polio this last year!. (One problem is that we don't carry change anymore - just credit cards, so I guess we'll have to change (EXCUSE THE PUN) our habits a little bit.)
and he mentioned the Foundation Dinner will be on November 19th and will be a lot of fun as it will be at Northridge Golf Course.
♦Pres. Vicky said that things are a little lean as far as birthdays are concerned this month is concerned but Vicky has a Club Anniversary - we got some cookies to eat and congrats to Vicky for sticking with the Club....
♦ Tony Marques announced that recently he heard from our sister Club in Ilhavo, Portugal and they reported that they brought in 12,000 Euros from their bicycle race fund raiser. He mentioned that we should let them know about our water project, since, they too are interested in projects in Africa. It seems that they continue to have an interest in our Club and we do theirs.....

Virginia Stone was born in Washington DC, but grew up mostly in Palo Alto, CA (said Jay Boatwright in his introduction)
She graduated from UC Davis with a business/textiles degree and earned an internship with Weinstock’s as a senior, and accepted her first job in their retail management program after graduating, thus moving to Sacramento.
She worked as a retail store dept manager and later as a clothing buyer for 15 yrs with Weinstock’s.
As travel got to be too much with a young son, Virginia moved into interior design working as a store manager, fabric buyer and company trainer for 20 years with Calico Corners.
As her mother developed Alzheimer’s she began working part time for a senior living company (to educate herself about Alzheimer’s) while still working for Calico, working 7 days a week for 2 years.
Virginia left Calico and became a full time sale/marketing director for Carmichael Oaks Senior Living
After 8 years she moved to Oakmont Senior Living as a sales/marketing director, later serving as the Executive Director, retiring last October.
On Nov 1Virginia accepted the Interim Executive Director position with the Carmichael Chamber.
She has lived in Carmichael for 35 years, is married to her high school sweetheart and has 2 sons, ages 35 and 27.
An avid fly fisherwoman, she owns a home in Montana which she just returned from a 3 ½ month stay.
She is also an active member of the Carmichael Kiwanis, former President of the Chamber, and a former Honorary Mayor of Carmichael.
Virginia mentioned that the Chamber was founded in 1948 and is now in it's 71st year ( I noted exactly the same as our Club)! The mission of the Chamber is to help businesses in it's community. Carmichael is not incorporated, what the Chamber likes to do is pair business to business. It has it's headquarters in Milagro Center. Virginia said that Serritella's and Bella Brue restaurants will soon move there.
The Chamber is a non-profit 501(c)6 corporation, donations are non-deductible analogous to Real Estate boards. Donations are deductible if going only to a non-profit charity. The Chamber members are 304 strong and business and residential members do not have to live in Carmichael. The dues start at $150 per year, non-profits are $150 per year and can attend all events. Members can post all their events in the Chamber's newsletter that goes out to 1000 people. There are 14 members of the Board and the only paid member is the Executive Director. The president this year, Jim Alves, is from SMUD. SMUD is a good partner with the Chamber. The "Honorary Mayor" is on the Board and then there are Ambassadors and Volunteers. The Chamber likes volunteers, think about volunteering. The Chamber has sponsors, for instance, SMUD is a "Diamond Sponsor" and sponsorship goes into other categories - Diamond ($10,000); Platinum ($5,000); down to $500. The Chamber will promote your business and you can get articles in the Carmichael Times (Susan Skinner is affiliated with this process).
The Chamber has a luncheon every month on Tuesday at the Christ Community Church. The cost is $20. A lot of networking between members goes on there and then there are mixer parties every month. The next one will be in October at Mt.Vernon.
The Chamber has many activities, awarding "Person of the Year", "Business Man or Woman of the Year", "Non-profit of the Year", - The last honored was Shriners Hospital. There is the "Best of Carmichael" celebration with food, drink etc. and the yearly election of the "Honorary Mayor". Each candidate collects money for charity at one dollar per vote. The winner is announced on November 1st.
Lastly Virginia talked about the Carmichael Improvement District which was established three years ago ( and which we have been informed about in the past), that helps Carmichael businesses along a corridor from Fair Oaks to California, to clean up and regulate the area.
One more thing, the Chamber has "ribbon cutting" ceremonies for new businesses that can get advertisement in the Carmichael Times.
Virginia is looking for a replacement of herself as executive director - anybody interested?
President Vicky noted to Ex.Dir. Virginia that a book, in honor of her presentation, will be presented to the Carmichael Library (Sacrament Public Library)!

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
