President  David Thorman opened the 29th meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 23rd of February, 2021 and the 40th "virtual meeting" overall ( will it ever end?) As is his custom, he rang the " Official Bell" (and virtually) to start the meeting. The "pledge" was performed by esteemed member Chuck McBride and he added the following "Thought for the Day":

Courage is what it takes to stand up and talk
Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen

ANNOUNCEMENTS

FUND RAISER:
Dick Bauer gave out the following flyer detailing our newest and perhaps our only fund raiser this year. Please invite your friends and all the ones that you would invite to the Crab Feed to partake in the fund raiser. Jay and Vicky Boatwright have already tasted the dinner and have given their stamp of approval.
Live links are as follows:

► R. I. WEBINAR:  Jay Boatwright reported that he just zoomed a webinar meeting which was a world wide Rotary International meeting and had Holgar Knaak, the president of RI there. Because of COVID, Holgar can’t travel and so has not been to his office near Chicago. He has also been restricted from travel all over the world. Jay said that in the broadcast that Carmichael’s Ugandan Water Project was mentioned. It has been recorded and probably can be seen for anyone in the future.

SPEECH CONTEST:  Phil Danz reported that the speech contest will happen on Tuesday, March 16th. We have 3 committed contestants, and his sources say that more will be coming. Jay Boatwright is going to run the technical part (Zoom), and Alan Gallaway will oversee the judges. The three contestants are excellent and Phil looks forward to a great contest (virtually).

GOLF TOURNAMENT: President David said that the Easter Seals Carmichael Golf Tournament is slated to be on June 11th, and we will have our “Golf
Assembly Meeting” on June 8th.

►CARMICHAEL PARK DISTRICT:  Have completed two Bocci Ball courts in their park and word has it, that the Carmichael Park staff is challenging the Carmichael Rotary Club to a match on the courts when it can be safely done (maybe we start practicing A.S.A.P.!)

We were fortunate today to have two representatives from the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera Association, Kayleigh Neff, Development and Engagement Management, and Giuliano Kornberg, Chief Revenue and Development Officer, to tell us about the exiting happenings with the Philharmonic and Opera Association in this hopefully ending season of COVID. Also our creative hosts Mark Urban and Geronimo cooked up an appropriate beginning with the Looney tunes offering a cartoon show centered on "I want to kill the wabbit" by Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny "What's Opera" (above).
Because of the beautifully organized slide show about their activities, I have mostly just recreated it below.
In the Q and A session, Giuliano mentioned that the performances probable will not get back to live audiences until the fall, but, in the meantime there are wonderful performances that you can get digitally by becoming a subscriber for $125.00 or to see a particular performance, you can, for a donation of $25. You can go to https://sacphilopera.org  for information. Tara Abraham made an interesting comment that perhaps the performances might be put into "virtual reality form" where you are surrounded by the whole audience - both Giuliano and Kaleigh thought this was a "terrific idea"! President David also put in his "terrific idea" when he announced that a book, in honor of their presentation will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).

HAPPY FINES
At first  for a fleeting second, it looked as if there were going to be no "Happy Thoughts", but then, after a slight admonishing look from President David, they came spilling forth .Vicky Boatwright gave 1A because Jack Shearer had joined our meeting, all the way from the Southland, Chuck McBride  mumbled something about Jay Boatwright getting a new truck and Vicky becoming a grandmother to a Clydesdale and only paid 1A, Stan Roe gave 1A for polio +, Vince Iosso got his 2nd shot, and generously BONGED THE GONG for polio+, Mark Urban gave 1A and mentioned that he and Geronimo had cooked up the idea of starting the session with the "Bugs Bunny Operatic cartoon; Walter Malhoski gave 1A to tell us he saw Bocelli in a concert; Jack Shearer said that he gave a contribution to the Fund Raiser even though he won't be able to get the meal and Jay stated that it was Jack who started the first Carmichael crab feed many years ago.

Donations as of 2-14-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (nearing 300), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
