Hi all,

I have some good news - Carmichael Elementary needs our help!  They are excited to partner with our club again this year with even more opportunities than in the past.  Please see below and let me know of your interests ASAP:
  • The second grade teacher has received a some brand new raised planter beds which are in the box and unassembled, along with many bags of potting soil.  She needs someone to assemble them and fill them with soil so the students can start planting their winter garden.  This would likely be during a weekday, ASAP.
  • The kindergarten teachers would like volunteers to come to their classroom, probably just an hour or less at a time, to read a book or two to their students.
  • The kindergarten teachers would also like a few volunteers to help with their morning outdoor recess time.  They'd like a couple "stations" where an adult would show them how to play a game or do an activity. The game/activity would be provided - they just need someone to oversee it and help the children participate.
  • The school's annual book fair will be 3 afternoons in November:  11/15, 16 & 17.  They'd like 2 to 3 volunteers to help watch the children with the books, and possibly help with book purchases.  They just need us for about one hour on each of those 3 days - starting around noon or so.
  • They plan to have their Winter Wonderland again this year and would like our help.  They hope we can bring Santa & Mrs. Claus (who will be inside the multi-purpose room this year) and plan to have a similar setup to last year in addition to more activities inside.
  • There are more activities being planned for next spring (Jog-a-thon, Open house) - I will pass along info regarding more opportunities when I hear about them.
I'd like to get a response back to the school soon so they know how many Carmichael Rotarians to count on, so please reply to this email or call or text me.

Let me know if you have any questions at all.  Hoping to hear from you soon!

So it came to happen that District R.I. Foundation chair, Joe Scheimer, challenged our own R.I. Foundation Chair Mark Beil to a bet that we couldn't raise $1000 for Polio+ and if we did, he would show up wearing a green wig - Doesn't he look pretty?

Tour of the Sacramento Fire Museum
Whilst other Carmichael Rotary members were doing other things on Saturday, October 22nd., Vocational Director Frank Pease arranged a great tour at the Sacramento Fire Museum (Saturday) at 3650 Industrial Blvd, West Sacramento. The museum was stuffed full with interesting equipment and artifacts from as far back as the Civil War. The Tour was led by a experienced Fire Fighter, whose dad was also a Fireman, Larry Schluer (Larry did come to our Club some time ago to talk about the museum). His knowledge and enthusiasm made for an exciting 1 and 1/2 hour tour...Above Frank Pease and Phil Danz enjoy pretending to drive a big fire engine. Click on "Read More" below for more pictures...

A special project has nearly been completed with the collaboration of the Arden Arcade and Carmichael Rotary Club volunteers. The project is to provide shelter for a special desert tortoise,  Cowboy Sparkles, at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. So far, two days of work have been spent on the project and they are waiting on sides and tops to finish the project in one other session. This will make at least one Desert  Tortoise very happy,  (and will insure for him to have a long healthy life at the center. The project made television news on CBS! - here are the links:

THE CARMICHAEL KIWANIS CLUB

It was a pleasure to have good friends Sharon Ruffner and Jackie DaLu, both immediate past presidents from the Carmichael Kiwanis Club, to tell us about their activities. We have partnered together with Carmichael Park (of which Sharon is an employee) on projects in the past and even played against each other in a Bocce Ball Contest (we won by 1 point). To learn more, please “click on” read more below.

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Greg Freeman, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
gregfreeman@saclibrary.org

Over the past eight years, nearly 500 books have been donated to the Carmichael Public Library. We show only the latest donated books with the names of the Guest Speakers.
