ANNOUNCEMENTS
♦Uganda Water Project Programby Egasa Samson, Ugandan Member of the Tororo Rotary Club, is slated to occur virtually on Tuesday, 6/23/2020 – because of the time difference between Uganda and us, President Vicky proposed that we change our meeting time to:
7:45-8:15 pm-social
8:15-8:30 pm-abbreviated announcements & fines
8:30-9:00 pm-Samson’s presentation
9:00 pm-end of meeting
The members at the meeting, in virtual format, voted unanimously to change the time as above -Please make note of this change. It promises to be a very interesting meeting all the way from Africa!
♦ Thank you for voting for the Jack Shearer Paul Harris Fellow award recipient. The recipient will be announced at a future meeting.
♦ There are a couple more hour-long FREE Saturday (10-11 am) online training classes you can register for, and previous training sessions have been recorded so you can watch at your leisure! Check it out on the District website and if you plan to attend one of the future classes, you must register ahead of time to get the call-in information.
♦ Blood is badly needed, stocks are down:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
♦ Since our meetings are on virtual format, Chuck McBride is frustrated and desperate for money for the Club and our charities. There are two ways you can give to him - send a check to Carmichael Rotary Club, P. O. Box 129, Carmichael, CA 95609 or a better way, is to just let Dick Bauer knowthe amount you want to give and with great delight he will put it on your credit card and designate which charity you want: food bank, club, club foundation, polio+etc.
♦ Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!
► JUNE 9TH: CO-EXISTING WITH THE COYOTE - GUY GALANTE
► JUNE 16: VISION FOR SACRAMENTO COUNTY - RICH DESMOND - CANDIDATE FOR BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
► JUNE 23: UGANDAN WATER PROJECT - EGASA SAMSON - 7:45 - 9:00 PM.
►JUNE 30: DEMOTION OF PRESIDENT VICKY BOATWIGHT
The “virtual format” has drawbacks in many ways, since we can’t get close to and enjoy each other physically, but there is one advantage in that it can increase greatly the reach of getting guests like Dennis Moffett from Rapid City, Iowa or Jack Shearer in Los Angeles. Today was a case in point as our esteemed Program’s Director,Dick Bauer somehow procured the services of a true expert on polio from Rotary International who is speaking on very intriguing topic and reaching out to us all the way from Chicago, Illinois.
Dick’s intro: Carol Pandak is the Director of Rotary International's Polio Plus program, a position she has held since the year 2000.
Carol directs all aspects of Rotary’s polio eradication program including administration, advocacy, communications and financial oversight, fundraising support, grants management, and volunteer engagement.
She is the staff liaison to Rotary’s International Polio Plus Committee, the volunteer committee that provides policy guidance to the Polio Plus program and works closely with the partners such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the global polio Eradication Initiative.
Carol’s work has taken her all over the world where she has monitored polio immunization campaigns, assessed Rotary’s and partner activities at the country-level, and participated in high-level technical and stakeholder meetings.
Editor's note: Since Carol presented a well thought out, excellent slide show explaining the work that Polio+ is doing in the battle against COVID-19 pandemic, I have elected to include the 13 slides she has shown us, which arereally self-explanatory....
The important and fascinating take away from Carol's talk is that polio+, is now using it's knowledge and resources to aid in the COVID-19 pandemic. Both viruses can and will be handled in the same way - going towards a vaccine. Rotary is proud to help out in this endeavor.
President Vicky informed Carol that in her honor and all the way out here in Sacramento, a book will be dedicated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).
HAPPY FINES
v icky Boatwright conducted the "Happy Fines", Dennis Moffett jumped all the way from Rapid City, Iowa with 1A ($20) for Polio+; Geronimo (Greg Hererra) cracked his tooth and was lucky to find a dentist to fix it -1A for Polio+; Jack Shearer is happy to rejoin the best small club in Rotary 1A for Polio+; Walter Malhoski gave 1A for Polio+ complimenting Chuck McBride on Foundation remuneration; Phil Danz gave 1 big A for the wonderful project Walter Malhoski accomplished *(see below); Troy gave 2 A polio+; Chuck McBride - 1A polio+; Shyama Chakroborty 1 and 1/2 A ($30) for polio+ noting that in India where he grew up , polio was a big problem; Katha Danz gave 1A ditto; Frank Pease - ditto; Vinne Iosso gave 2A ($40) for the burger which he hasn't had in a month (he is getting skinny); Mark Urban gave 1A to Polio+ for the great presentation; Stan Roe ditto in recognition of Dick getting a great presenter Carol Pandak; Vicky Boatwright - ditto. RAFFLE
SO (DOUBLE DITTO, DITTO, DITTO, FROM LAST WEEK) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
