We held the October 23rd meeting at Mountain Mike’s Pizza restaurant on El Camino because Ancil Hoffman was fumigating their restaurant due to “bugs”. In our improvised new settings, our intrepid President Greg Herrera opened the meeting and since there was not an attainable “Thought”, Greg turned to Phil Danz and asked him to lead the assemblage in the reading of the “4 Way Test”. Phil did this but led the group in song, singing the “4 Way Test” to the melody of “Sweet Betsy from Pike”.
♦JOKE OF THE DAY: Our president, Greg, in his quest to find a suitable joke in this newsletter, filed the following joke at the meeting. It did just barely passed the Censorship Committee……
♦ BLOOD SOURCE: Chuck McBride wants you to give blood and tell them that you are donating for the Carmichael Club. We are in competition with other Clubs in the District.
►UGANDAN WATER PROJECT:
Richard Olebe gave one of his signature slide shows at our meeting which had pictures of the recent progress with the water project, and an up to date accounting of the project. Richard said that it will be completed slightly under budget and is, at this moment, 80% finished. We were fortunate that the wells did not have to be dug as deeply as projected, fewer solar panels were needed and we benefited from a favorable exchange rate with the Ugandan Schilling. The project is expected to complete by mid-November.
Good job Richard!
♦ UGANDAN SAFARI TRIP: David Thorman reported that some of us have attended a planning meeting to travel to Africa next September and go on Safari and to visit our project in Uganda. Catherine Survillas, Rotarian and expert tour director has put together an exciting package for us. Going in a group would be cost effective and a lot of fun. Let David know if you are interested.

Jay Boatwright said that the “Bylaws Committee” has been hard at work revising the bylaws and now have them ready for acceptance by the membership. The committee consisted of Jay, Chuck McBride, Stan Roe, Greg Herrera, Dick Bauer and Mark Urban.Mark has been the expert consultant on the committee since he is a lawyer who specialized in corporate matters for the State of California. Mark said that the goal of the committee was to harmonize our legal documents with the R.I. Constitution, our Club’s Constitution, conform with California law governing public non-profit benefit corporations and to have bylaws that reflect the norms that we all follow.
Phil Danz moved that the bylaws be adopted; it was seconded by George Abraham.
After some discussion, a vote was called for and the bylaws were adopted unanimously.
Please “click on” read more to see the full bylaws….
N ow Vicky Boatwright was back and expressed her interest in anybodies "Happy Thoughts"....
Phil Danz gave $5 to celebrate that Mark Beil will be traveling to Japan; Mark said that he has family there (lucky person) and is leaving on October 31st; Stan Roe had a good time in Portland visiting family; Chuck McBride reiterated that we need to donate blood; Greg Herrera mentioned that he has a son in Tokyo and just got back from Las Vegas and bought a leather jacket there (I guess with his winnings); George Abraham mentioned that he has been to Japan a number of times on business; Jay Boatwright thanked all who participated on the bylaws committee and mentioned that he has been diagnosed with prostrate cancer and has to go through 26 more treatments (our good wishes go with you); Doug Haaland said something was his fault but thanked Mark Urban for his input on the bylaws.

RAFFLE
THERE WAS NO RAFFLE TODAY! WHY? BECAUSE OF THE LAST MINUTE CHANGE OF VENUE TO MIKES PIZZA, WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO BRING THE DECK OF CARDS (OF WHICH THERE ARE ONLY 9 OR SO LEFT). SO THOSE WHO SHOWED UP JUST TO HAVE A CHANCE AT THE $1000+ WENT HOME DISAPPOINTED!
Each year our district says "Thank you" to the clubs and individuals who so generously support our Foundation. Without the selfless donations made by individual Rotarians to support our 6 areas of focus, we could not make the impact in the world we do.
As RI President, Barry Rassin has said, Rotary is a force of nature, constantly shaping the world for the better, something for us to all be proud!
On November 3, I'm excited to share that Rotary International Vice President, John Matthews, will be visiting our district as our keynote speaker at our annual Foundation Awards Dinner! It is rare we have someone who is so beloved and influential come to our district to share in our celebration for those individuals and clubs who keep Rotary in motion by supporting one of the engines that make things happen in Rotary.
This year we will be celebrating and honoring a Rotarian who gave $1M to the foundation last year and we will be entertained by the vocal group 'Auburn Road' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJoVcVvH_V8 as they rise to the top of the country/rock record charts!
There will be Gold Medal winning wine giving out to the best table decorations and our theme this year is 'Holidays Around the World'!
So dress up with the holiday spirit in mind and come to celebrate with YOUR club & district on November 3, 2018.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
