We looked to President Greg Herrera to open the meeting and he did and then gave the mic to Vince Iosso who led us in the "Pledge" and gave a short very nice "thought" - something about if you don't try, you'll never achieve anything.
GUESTS
GLENN FONG, RAY WARD, BILL BOWEN, KATHERINE TURNER, LISA McCATES, ALEX DRUCKER
This joke was told by President Greg and deemed appropriate for election day!
So a politician dies and goes up to St. Peter’s gate and St. Peter gives him a choice – heaven or hell. He looks around heaven and it is peaceful and pleasant – but he decided he would like to know what hell was like. St. Peter says O.K. and he goes down there and he sees a lot of his old buddies and they are drinking, playing cards and having a great time. He goes back up to St. Peter and tells him that although heaven was nice, he would rather go to hell. So he goes back down and immediately he is put in chains, fire and brimstone is all around people are screaming and writhing in pain. He said to the Devil, why the big difference?– the Devil says – YOU VOTED!
VOTE WISELY NOVEMBER 2018!!

♦ FOUNDATION MEETING:
It was a pretty good dinner with Carmichael Rotary receiving numerous awards. Pictured are principles at the table with Dick Bauer holding the award for 100% club membership participation (“100% Giving Clubs”) with regard to foundation donations. Dick was also recognized as a Bequest Society donor.
Ed Bunting cleaned up with multiple recognition and three major donation awards including (but not necessarily limited to) Major Donor, Major Donor Level Two, Bequest Society and D5180 Foundation Triple Crown Members.
Carmichael Club was also recognized for Jay and Vicky Boatwright as Major Donors as was Don Wangberg a major donor.
Numerous Paul Harris Society members of the Carmichael Club were acknowledged.
Greg Herrera was in the running for the best dressed club president (in his Las Vegas Sport coat) but fell short of the award because of gravy stains on his clothing.

We were fortunate today to have one of our favorite past district governors, Glenn Fong, at our Club talking about the Foundation and the many ways to give to it. Glenn gave a slide show with intermittent videos to emphasize certain topics of interest. I have simply outlined what I thought were the highlights here.
The Rotary Foundation is the most financially sound, powerful, service organization in the world. It is funded by volunteers; it has a 4 star rating which is the highest rating of it’s kind. Rotary scores 97.51 out of 100 by prominent charity rating organizations. We should be very proud of it and the good it does in the world, including our (Carmichael and Tororo’s) recent Uganda water project (over $200,000)!
A basic level of giving is becoming a Paul Harris Fellow and donating $1000. You can join the Paul Harris Society by pledging $1000 per year. You can also become a Benefactor by agreeing to leave $1000 in your estate plan. There is also the bequest category agreeing to leave $10,000 in your estate to the Foundation. You can become a Major Donor by giving $10,000 cash and then ultimately, one can join the Arch Klumph society by donating $250,000.
One overlooked aspect by many clubs is the accumulation of Foundation recognition points over the years which can be used to give Paul Harris Fellows to individuals.
Glenn then talked about the different funds in the R.I. Foundation, the Annual fund, Restricted, and Permanent Fund. One important fact is that monies given come back to the District in 3 years. Next year, Vicky’s year 20% more will come back – allowing the District to do more things for their charities.
You can give to the endowment fund in which the interest will go to projects, or planned gifts – giving securities, real estate, rent from real estate, etc to R.I.
You can give directly by going to “my Rotary” online or give to the Foundation Chair of your Club. You can go to Rotary Direct and put on credit card or make regular monthly donation.
Glenn ended his talk with a movie about “Doing Good in the World”. President Greg pleasantly surprised PDG Glenn by announcing that, in his honor, a book will be dedicated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library)

Jay Boatwright had a birthday and put in some money, we sang “Happy Birthday” to him but he insulted us by saying that it sounded “lousy”; Ed Bunting RANG THE BELL again because his dog just went through meniscus surgery and is recovering well; Greg Herrera put in some $$ so that he could talk about his new dog “Sparky”again! ; Vince Iosso spent a week in Connecticut and also went to New York City; Doug and Jane Haaland attended and enjoyed the Foundation Dinner, Doug also suggested that Ed Bunting fund the whole Club in Vicky’s year; Vicky responded by RINGING THE BELL not forDoug’ssuggestion but because of her upcoming anniversary and other good things!

RAFFLE
THERE WAS again an official Raffle today with only 13 cards left with over $1000 in the kitty. Terry Sweeney had the winning ticket and was smiling like the Cheshire Cat when Doug placed the 13 cards in front of him. He seemed very assured that he was going to draw the Ace of Spades and win, he drew the card slowly, savoring every moment before his big win - BUT alas, he only drew the 9 of hearts. We all felt very sorry for him, but he got a very nice bottle of red wine from the Club's secret cellar.
Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
