Phil Danz introduced Dan McKay, a remarkable individual who has largely overcome the adversity of slowly becoming blind over many years due to a rare disease.
He has, in his forties, mastered braille, which is no easy task, cane walking, and thanks toGuide Dogs for theBlind, a wonderful organization, used his guide dog, Kirk, to navigate outdoors in the small town of Timmins, way up in north eastern Ontario, Canada.
Dan gave a presentation at our 4 seasons community “lecture series” in El Dorado Hills last year and we were so enamored with his stories that we had him back this year.
Dan started by thanking the Carmichael Rotary Club for allowing him to speak today about Guide Dogs and his experiences.
He showed a volunteer how you walk with a blind person by leaving your left arm for the person to touch and then walk – be sure to tell the blind person if you are going down or up steps.
He said that “sighted” people should know that you never touch or talk to a dog who is in harness. You should never give them “treats”. Dan said that only the dog owner can give commands. He said that his dog “does his business” on command and at a certain time of the day and on a hard surface. He gave an interesting illustration of how he “picks up” after his dog.
Dan says that thanks to Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB), he has been liberated to go out into the public, go on public transportation, to the store and virtually anywhere. He came, for instance, all the way from Canada on two flights with Kirk, his dog.
These trained dogs are selected to suit the personality of their owners – Dan says that he is outgoing and action oriented and Kirk matches that, a more subdued dog might be selected for a more placid person. Dan does all the grooming for his dog, which is a fun time for them both.
The dog is pattern trained in the beginning being with the selected dog. The dog will walk with the person (along with a sighted person) to a certain door (maybe a home or business) and it has to be the right door because the dog never forgets and will bring you back years later to that exact spot. Dogs navigate the person around obstacles, looks out for manholes or holes or dips in the pavement or ground, and actually will not let you walk through a door opening which to too low – so you won’t bump your head. They will bring you to the non “hinged” side of a door so that you can enter from the opening (some doors are hinged left and some right). They are trained to be “beneficially disobedient” so that your dog will not obey your command if the command will cause you harm. Dan mentioned that one day he was on the street corner and was going to cross but his dog would not obey his command – so he felt out in front of him with his hands and felt a ladder which was protruding from a truck and he would have smashed into it. GDBhas been very good to Danand have paid for everything related to his dog and his trips to San Rafael and Oregon for training and to “pick-up” his dog. Dogs are retired on average after seven years and the owner tell GDB when it is time to retire. Dan has had several Dogs and GDB budgets $100,000 for each dog.
President Vicky happily told Dan that in honor of his interesting presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library subsidiary)

Good ol’ Chuck McBride was available for the “Happy Talk” session and PDG Jim Thompson happily mused about wearing a cowboy hat back in the day when he was District Governor (we were all in "country western attire for the meeting), Now up pops Hamid Ahmadi, from nowhere, back from his trip to New Zealand and is now teaching online and BONGS THE GONG 3 times (wow) and he brought a bottle of wine which I enjoyed sharing; Troy Drennon is happy the 49ers are in the Superbowl; Jay Boatwright reminisced about the demotion of Jim Thompson – was the greatest – Jay drove to L.A. and was so saddened by the passing of Kobe Bryant; RayWard talked about comparing sons or something like that; Greg Herrera talked about his dog “Sparky” because Dan’s guide dog is so beautiful – I guess so is “Sparky”, and reflected on the sad passing of Doug and Paris – every day should be a wake up call and he RANGTHE BELL, Dick Bauer related that he almost cancelled next years season tickets to the Kings, but then they won a game, Ed Bunting BONGED THE GONG three times for Kobe, Doug and Paris – and someone in his family; Walter Malhoski related how he has survived and illness of two year’s ago and is “vertical and verifiable”; Chuck McBride said something to do with a swift stealing of the bell but was returned within minutes, Vicky Boatwright also had fun in L.A. – Wow six BONGS OF GONG and one RANG BELL – adds up to $700.00!

RAFFLE
Seemslike Hamid Ahmadi should have won the raffle because he had generously BONGED THE GONG three times and it would only be fitting, but he just selected the 3 of Spades. It didn't seem to bother him a bit - maybe because he knows that there is hardly any money in kitty anyway. I don't know if he got any wine for a consolation prize...
WE ARE HAVING A CRAB FEED ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH, 2020 AT THE LA SIERRA COMMUNITY CENTER IN CARMICHAEL. PLEASE CONTACT OUR CHAIRPERSON VINCE IOSSOAT 916-803-4766 OR EMAIL AT vamaio@att.net . Please Hurry, tickets are limited.....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
