AUGUST

Now President David Thorman opened the 6th meeting "virtually"and in a very lonely condition secluded in his own home.

The "pledge" and "thought" were performed by our esteemed member Vicky Boatwright who gave the following very timely thought:

HONORARY
 RACHAEL TAYLOR

ANNOUNCEMENTS
♦ PARTIAL IN PERSON MEETINGS: Our astute President David, always looking ahead, is asking if the time might be right to have partial "in house" meetings. Perhaps we can meet at his home and have up to ten persons, all dutifully masked and social distanced. Then, have the rest of the persons attending on Zoom. This might get us back a little bit to normalcy - I volunteered myself and Katha because I know that if you show up at 5 o'clock, you get a free Martini. Please let President David know if you are amenable to having partial "in person" meetings.

♦  Stan Roe has announced today that we will be giving $1000.00 to the San Juan School District. The funds will go to their food closet which desperately need donations, They, themselves prefer to buy the food, because there are different needs for the different circumstances of their constituents may be in. Some are living in motels, others in cars, others on the street and may not be able to have sustained refrigeration..

RISE AGAINST HUNGER: Vicky Boatwright announced that the Board has authorized $500 for Rise Against Hunger to buy 1470 meals for their recipients. They also would like us to volunteer for the "hands on" preparation of meals sessions. It looks like we will help them at their warehouse in Natomas. They will have 10 persons per shift - a maximum of 20 people. Please email Vicky if you are interested in volunteering and we will go from there to find a convenient time for the project. Vicky asked for a showing of "hands" and it seemed that there are a lot of us who want to help with the project.
WE MAY NEED A NEW PRESIDENT-ELECT It seems that "honest Abe- Vince"has let it be known that there is a good chance that he will be moving out of state within the next year. This is sad for us and the Club, but it is best we know of his plans, since we can now have a substitute for him. Any volunteers?

Carmichael Improvement District - an update
We were fortunate indeed to have Rachael Taylor back to our Club, although in "virtual format", to give us an update on the Carmichael Improvement District (of which she is the Executive Director).  Last time she was just new on the job and she told us of the trauma of seeing her childhood (and parents) home destroyed in a recent California fire. She has a keen interest in seeing businesses prosper along the Fair Oaks corridor. She told us about the formation of a PBID, business improvement area - the CID, Carmichael Improvement District which encompasses Fair Oaks corridor,  El Camino to Palm, Marconi and the Carmichael Park and the Elks Lodge. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1BXsugmPMAKTw1jcXvSYC9a7Qfq4&usp=sharing
What is new is that the CID has contracted with a new security company, the California Patrol Operations, and have a six month contract with them. They provide a 12 hours per day patrol, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and after hours are available. You can call them 24/7. One of the goals now is to add more night time hours of patrol for businesses - to avoid vandalism. They clean streets along Fair Oaks Blvd five days a week, very early in the morning - still working with the pandemic going on. It looks like the amount of stuff picked up will double because of the pandemic. The PBID renewal periodically by law in 5 years on the first renewal, and Rachael says that Carmichael's upcoming renewal gives them an opportunity to make changes - Rachael says that they may expand their boundaries by 24%. She said they have banners ready to put along Fair Oaks Blvd.
The Carmichael Improvement district has a number of meetings during the month. Rachael says that perhaps the most interesting meetings are those concerned with security. A diverse group consisting of Sheriff Deputies, CHP Officers, properties owners and homeless representatives may attend. They talk about specific issues and it is good for everyone in the room. You can get information about meetings at https://www.discovercarmichael.com   President David brightened Rachael's day by informing her that, in honor of her presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).

HAPPY FINES

It was not a very productive "Happy Thoughts" session again. Why? I don't know, perhaps we have Covid conservatism...Karen Munsterman gave 1A ($20) because yesterday was her daughter's birthday and she lives in a facility nearby, Covid has caused problems, but she got a nice present from her cousin Scott; Troy Drennon was ecstatic because his daughter Emily lost her first front tooth, he is donating 1A ($20), I remember when you got only a dime from the tooth fairy. That's all!

Donations as of 8-22-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 8-4-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
