The sixth and important meeting of the 2019-2020 Rotary Year was opened by President Vicky Boatwrighton August 13th, 2019 Three "thoughts for the day"was given by esteemed member Mark Beil but I chose just to remember one:

Go to hell for the company”.

Rotary Leadership Institute is designed to help newer members learn more about Rotary and members who want to develop more leadership skills (new 3-part class for newer ones interested in learning more about Rotary and/or if you’re interested in a leadership role in the future). This course is all day, including lunch, and has a $25 fee. Levels1 & 2 are Sat, Sept 14 at the Citrus Heights City Hall. Level 3 will be in Oct during the District Conference in Reno (guessing they will repeat it for those who didn’t attend the conference).♦Rotary District 5180 Conference is Oct 25-27 at the Peppermill in Reno. It is on your club calendar. Sign up soon, and book your hotel room at a reduced rate! We’d like a GREAT TURNOUT from our club so we can have lots of FUN together! Go to the district 5180 website (www.rotary5180.org) and scroll down on the page just a little and there’s a link for Escape to Rotaryville.
Remember the Lip Sync contest DG Ray mentioned, and the silly video he played during his visit? Do we want to do a lip sync video for the contest?
Rotary International Convention next June (6-10) is in Honolulu. It’s on your club calendar and you can register at www.RIconvention.org.
Another nice letter of "Thank You" from one of our scholarship recipients:

► AUGUST 20 - MEMBERSHIP AND CLUB DEVELOPMENT - Michael Reinero
We were indeed fortunate today to have as our speaker, Rachael Taylor, the new CEO of the Carmichael Improvement District Association (CID). Rachael is a native of Paradise, California and has had the misfortune of seeing her childhood home and parents home destroyed in the recent devastating fire. She is a past Rotarian from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She got the opportunity to become a leader of a District in the Sacramento area and jumped at the chance. Rachael has gone through the experience of losing a business and doesn't want anyone to lose their business again.
Rachael mentioned the law passed in 1994 - AB-1381 which authorized cities to form property and business improvement districts for the purpose of levying assessments within a business improvement area (PBID). The CID auspices includes the crossroads of Fair Oaks and Manzinita to Jan Drive and sides streets Ingle, Sutter etc. The various property owners pay assessments that remit back to CID, money is with-held to provide security and maintenance - and provide vitality to the community by insuring a clean welcoming environment for shoppers in the area. The Paladin Security Company has been hired to be "eyes" on the ground, taking care of small detail, can order notice of trespassers on a 24/7 basis. They make sure that trash is picked up, there are clean roads free of graffiti and generally to keep the business areas looking clean. And they work closely with local police (Sheriff's Dept) and Churches to help provide housing for the homeless by using a "navigator" - an individual who will meet with homeless people and try to get them into housing by connecting them with various agencies. The Dept. of Transportation will complete Phase 3 - making improvements on Fair Oaks Boulevard from north of Marconi Ave. to Landis Ave. Please don't get in the way of shoppers during this construction phase.
CID has a new Brand which is not on the Brochure below yet. To find out more about the Carmichael Improvement District go to:
President Vicky pleasantly surprised Rachael by telling her that a book, in her name, will be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library)

Itwas another “Happy Thought” session conducted by Chuck McBride, but he reverted to his old “mean” self by inflicting wounds ($) on Bill Baxter by fining him for preventing Mark Beil from being on-time for giving the “Pledge” and “Thought” . Bill, it seems, made the mistake of talking too much toMark outside on the patio. Bill, in spite of being chastised, rose above the occasion and threw in a brand new $20 bill and complemented speaker Rachael Taylor on her presentation – what class; Donna Thorne put in some because she was happy to be with her old Club; Karen Munsterman BONGED THE GONG and I don’t know why; Don Wangberg put in some because his daughter is visiting; Mark Beil BONGED THE GONG to get 3 tickets for the raffle? ( there is about $2 in the pot!) ; George Abraham’s son is back in school and progressing in his Eagle Scout project; Katha Danz put in a big $10 because this was “left hander’s day” and she is left handed – this forced husband Phil to have to put in $10 and it snowed balled into 2 or three others who put in $ -like Jay Sedlak and like Vinne Iossowho also mentioned that our bartender Corrine is leaving us; Troy Drennon put in something, maybe because he is taking over his new office; President Julie DePrado-Schott of the Citrus Heights Club put in some because she was thankful to be present at our great meeting; Rachael Taylor put in some as a “thank you” for inviting her”; Doug Haaland put in some because his 19 year air conditioner broke down… wow, in the summer heat. Results - 2 Bong Gongers....

Karen Munsterman drew the true winning card for the session but it was not true enough, it was the Ace of Hearts!

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
