The Carmichael Rotary Club supporting Soil Born Farms (Sacramento Area, CA)
which brings urban farming to the community
President Richard Olebe opened the meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club at the Old Spaghetti Factory near Watt Ave. He fulfilled all of his commitments, namely, the reading of the "Pledge", "the Four-Way Test", and presented the "Thought for the Day" given to him by esteemed member, Phil Danz.

Fellow Carmichael Rotarians,
We have been invited to partner with Arden Arcade Rotary Club on their grant project to build a wooden enclosure for Effie Yeaw's cute rescued tortoise next month (he's been living in a tub since they received him). Jay and I have been meeting with the parties to help plan the project and Effie Yeaw is super excited for this new addition to their facility.
The entire structure will only be 16 feet long and 7 feet deep, off the back of the deck of the Nature Center's main building. Carmichael Rotarians have been asked to provide some hands-on help on two dates:
Sat, Oct 15 beginning approx 9 am:
work on assembling wood pieces for the enclosure at AA Rotarian Al Cady's house. He is donating most of the wood (one of his passions is harvesting wood and building projects like this). OR
work with AA Rotarians and a local Boy Scout troop (they are 12-14 year olds supervised by the AA Rotary President) to clear out existing vegetation in the enclosure area, dig a one-foot trenching along the front and two sides, dig 8 post holes, and place posts in concrete. Most of the heavy work will be done by the Boy Scouts, but they may need a little assistance and guidance.
Sun, Oct 23 beginning approx 9 am: Installation day at Effie Yeaw (see attached map). We will be putting together all the parts and installing with AA Rotarians.
More details will be available soon, but please let me know ASAP which activities you want to help with so we have a Carmichael Rotary head count to share with the committee. Arden Arcade plans to give us equal signage on the enclosure, so let's show them what a great club we are to work with.
Thanks,
Vicky

TwoRYLA recipients , Danika Lamb (2nd from left) and Lucas Ferguson (2nd from right) came to our Rotary Meeting and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to attend RYLA camp this year. Danika was given to us by the Fair Oaks Club. Danika's proud mom is on the far left and Lucas's proud grandfather, our own Stan Roeis on the far right. In the middle is our Club's Director of Youth Programs George Abraham. Both students gave short speeches about their experiences at the camp - both said that they made a lot of friends and it changed their attitude in a positive way.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Greg Freeman, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Over the past eight years, nearly 500 books have been donated to the Carmichael Public Library. We show only the latest donated books with the names of the Guest Speakers.
