ECONOMIC & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MONTH

President  Dick Bauer opened the 13th Rotary meeting of the 2021-2022 year.

Esteemed Member Walter Malhoski gave the pledge and read the 4 Way test and gave his "Thought for the Day":

"One should tend their own garden

and leave the rest to humanity"

*Editor's Note: I believe this is a version of  a quote in Voltaire's Candide where: "This honest Turk..."(lives in a place that) "seems to be a far better place than Kings...that we must cultivate our garden."

Chuckles for the day:

POLIO+ SOCIETY: Why not join for $100 a year and get recognized with a pin at our meeting on October 26th. Mail in your flyer to Tom Cicchini.

We have an opportunity to join with others to help with Effie Yeaw's Habitat Restoration native planting
project to dig holes, install cages, mulch and plant native plants on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Vicky Boatwright sent 'round a sign-up sheet - it will be a nice, easy, and rewarding couple of hours.
Let her know if you are interested.

HANDS ON PROJECTS The Board has expressed an interest in having more "hands on" projects and Vicky has a spate of possible not too difficult projects available -like help plant a few plants at Carmichael Park, assist in the library at the Carmichael School and participate in their event. November 15-18, 8:30-200 pm.  Also,  to partner with other Clubs such as Kiwanis, Lions, and Shreiners. Our friend Sharon Ruffner is now president of the Carmichael Kiwanis Club and they have a project to assemble food packets for a couple of hours. Let Vicky know if you are interested in volunteering. It also is a great way to get potential new members involved.

Getting to Know Her - Vicky Boatwright

Vicky said that she was born in Heidelberg, Germany when her father was serving over there in the army. She was a dual citizen of USA and Germany until she was 18 and had a right to choose. At 6 months of age, the family moved to California and settled in Albany. It was a small town then and did not have a middle school until much later. She enjoyed going all the way through high school there and has many friends and great school reunions. Vicky says that her ambition was to be a secretary and she took classes in high school and business classes at Heald Business College.
She got a job with Wells Fargo Bank in the property management division, where she met her future (one and only) husband Jay. While she was dating someone else, she and Jay became friends and all their friends wanted them to get together romantically and encouraged their relationship. When Vicky’s relationship ended, Jay and Vicky began dating and got engaged in 1979 and they were married in November 1979. Many of you may know that Jay had a pilot’s license, and they spent many hours in air, traveling here and there. Vicky took flying lessons to the extent that she was sure that, if anything happened to Jay during flight, she could at least land the plane. They bought their first house in Concord and Vicky intimates that it wasn’t the greatest house. Soon thereafter, Jay got a job in Sacramento in 1982. Vicky got a job with the Anheuser Busch Company. She studied for her real estate license but got pregnant with Sarah in 1986 and Corinne 1989 – she was so excited to be a mom that she really didn’t pursue a real estate career and enjoyed being a stay at home mom.
She joined Carmichael’s Inner Wheel Club in 1985 and enjoyed friends and their activities. Inner Wheel did many good things over the years, but now is mostly a social club which Vicky enjoys to this day.
Dennis Moffett’s ex-wife Joan asked if Vicky wanted to go to work for Anheuser Busch again in their governmental affairs department, Vicky jumped at the chance and has been there since 2003.
In 2012, Jay, who was president of the Carmichael Club in 1989 and 2012, finally asked Vicky to become a Rotarian and the rest is history. She wound up being Carmichael’s first and finest woman president (2019-2020). She enjoys her many friends, book groups, traveling with family in their RV and visiting places on the ocean.

MEMBERSHIP - BILL TOBIN
We were fortunate today to have District 5180 Membership Chair, Bill Tobin, with us to on a Zoom meeting, we unfortunately were small in attendance. This did not keep Bill from giving us a thoughtful and inspiring lecture on membership. Bill started out by explaining info on certain "Myths" about ways to get and sustain "New Members". See below:
Right now, Rotary membership is up a bit world wide, but is down in the U.S. Our Clubs are withering from lack of new members. Assertion that our Clubs are doing fine is not true. Bill put up statistics that show Rotary socials (Myth #2) are not good member getters probably because members talk about everything else, but Rotary. Myth #3 is that we just keep doing Rotary and we will get new members by osmosis. They simply will be drawn into our Clubs. Bill addressed Myth #4 that if each member brings in a member, their membership numbers will double.
According to statistics, each member bringing one new potential member to the Club will produce an 8% increase in our total members. Above show that each member must bring 2 new potential members in order to reach our goal. Bill makes the point that bringing in new members is a responsibility of each individual in the Club, not just a "Membership Chairperson". We each need to do our part.
Bill makes the point that potential new members are all around us -
all we need to do is to ask them to a meeting (hopefully where we will talk about Rotary) or a "hands on" event or Fundraiser. Inspire them by educating about the value of Rotary.

HAPPY THOUGHTS

On October 19th:
Katha Danz, first in line, generously gave up her meal money ($20) because she is happy it is going to rain this next week; Walter Malhoski RANG THE BELL – his grandchild had a 6 month’s birthday and wife Patty came home from France and something about Voltaire; Troy Drennon’s daughter Emily had her 8th birthday, so he BONGED THE GONG with $100 going to the Foundation (which one?); Vicky Boatwright gave meal money celebrating her trip to Oregon with her sisters – just the girls: Jay gave likewise because she came home; Ramouna and Heine gave both meal money – glad that Vicky came home?

Donations as of 10-20-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (NEARING 400), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
