♦ SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Karen Munsterman:
DATE & TIME:
It will be held on Sunday, October 14, 2018. We would like everyone to be there about 9:00 AM. We will need help to cook the hot dogs, some to put all of the condiments, cookies, etc in the bags, most of us to wrap the hot dogs and put them in the coolers until needed, and a few will need to stay until 2:00ish to make sure all the lunches are handed out.
LOCATION & DIRECTIONS:
Many asked for the name of the school. It is Warren T. Eich Middle School in Sierra Gardens, Roseville. DO NOT GOOGLE THE SCHOOL FOR AN ADDRESS TO GPS . IT WILL NOT GET YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO!!! Here are accurate directions.
* Take Sunrise Blvd, toward Roseville.
* Turn right onto Coloma Rd.
* Cross over Oakridge Rd. and it will take you directly into the parking lot.
* Stay to the left and go through the gate (should be someone to let you in. If not call my cell)
* We are setting up in the Multipurpose room. The large building in front of you.
* If you are bringing supplies, go left around to the back side of building.

Nine years ago, Doug Haaland traveled to Israel with a group from California to study water policies.
He narrated a very nice slide show chronicling his trip.
He and Jane had as their guest for the day, Naila Lampard, who is Jane’s mother and was celebrating her 86th birthday. We had a nice celebration cake; Naila blew out the candles, those in attendance each got a piece of cake, we sang “Happy Birthday” and everyone had a good time.
Israel is a small country; its beaches are beautiful, and it has many wonderful monuments. It’s striking that soldiers are allowed to carry their weapons on or off duty and many Israeli citizens also carry sidearms.
One of the more interesting parts of Israeli society is the presence of mezuzahs that are placed on the doorpost of most every home and hotel room.
We saw pictures of a modern kibbutz – Doug mentioned that not only are they small collective agricultural ( and other) communities, but also serve as early warning and monitoring areas for use in times of crisis or attack.
Many places where you dig, you find antiquities. Doug mentioned that in the city of Jerusalem, which has important Jewish and Christian pilgrimage sites, they have been attempting to build a light rail system, but it zig-zags all over the place to avoid historical sites.
The southern city of Eilat, on the Red Sea and across from Acaba, Jordan is the center of regional desalinization activity and serves as the home of technical support for water processes in Jordan.
They saw large areas where there is evaporation control by canvas covering. In Ashkelon they visited the 5th largest desalinization plant in the world which contains 40,000 reverse osmosis tubes. The plant also produces electricity as a by-product of the desalinization process.
Doug mentioned that one of the group asked the tour leader at Ashkelon, “What do you do with all the salt that you take from the water?” The answer was simple and direct, “We just return it to the sea.” No environmental problems there
Doug’s group spent their last day touring Jerusalem and the Arab section, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, in which is the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem and is shared by several Christian denominations which staff the various sections of the church Each order is not allowed to trespass on other’s territory. We saw the immovable ladder which was used to bring things up and down when the Church was closed down by the Muslim occupiers during the Holy Crusades and Jerusalem “traded occupiers” on a regular basis.
Doug presented such a fine organized slide show that I have copied his photos from PowerPoint in our “Read More” section.
A great event was put on for the families attending Effie Yeaw Nature Center's annual festival. Chair Jeff Thompson did his usually remarkable job along with help from a majority
of members of our Club. Dick Bauer has reported that"The Nature Fest had 1400 attendees! And we sold out of hot dogs, lemonade and pretzels just as we were closing up."
N ow Vicky Boatwright found time to elicit some "Happy Thoughts": Stan Roe congratulated Jeff Thompson for the great "Effie Yeaw" event and that Vince Iosso was a hard worker; David Thorman gave thanks to Richard Olebe for all his hard work on the "Uganda Project"; Jane Lampard Haaland was happy for her mom's 86th birthday and that she is off to see her grandson in Fresno; Walter Malhoski reported that Dick Bauer was home after his knee surgery and doing fine; Tyler Jennings was ecstatic about finding a new endeavor in a new profession; Greg Herrera bragged about acquiring a new puppy; Troy Drennon is happy because he is going to Cabo for his vacation; Doug piped up with salutations to his mother-in-law; and Jay Boatwright gave homage to the "bylaw committee" for their work.

THE fact is that we now have over $1000 in the kitty, and that maybe Jane Haaland would like to win the money by getting the Ace of Spades, and she did "Ace it" but with the Ace of Hearts. Jane got a nice bottle from the Club's secret wine cellar ....Looks like there is only 9-10 cards or so left, so my advice is for you and me to be sure to attend all the next meetings because your chances (and mine) of winning is looking pretty good!
Each year our district says "Thank you" to the clubs and individuals who so generously support our Foundation. Without the selfless donations made by individual Rotarians to support our 6 areas of focus, we could not make the impact in the world we do.
As RI President, Barry Rassin has said, Rotary is a force of nature, constantly shaping the world for the better, something for us to all be proud!
On November 3, I'm excited to share that Rotary International Vice President, John Matthews, will be visiting our district as our keynote speaker at our annual Foundation Awards Dinner! It is rare we have someone who is so beloved and influential come to our district to share in our celebration for those individuals and clubs who keep Rotary in motion by supporting one of the engines that make things happen in Rotary.
This year we will be celebrating and honoring a Rotarian who gave $1M to the foundation last year and we will be entertained by the vocal group 'Auburn Road' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJoVcVvH_V8 as they rise to the top of the country/rock record charts!
There will be Gold Medal winning wine giving out to the best table decorations and our theme this year is 'Holidays Around the World'!
So dress up with the holiday spirit in mind and come to celebrate with YOUR club & district on November 3, 2018.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
