Some people are just deserving - and in our Club Vince Iosso is just that - everyone knows this -with all of his contributions to the Club (as Treasurer, etc etc.) Today our District Governor Ray Ward took the time to come to our Club and award Vince with his Paul Harris Fellow #6. Congratulations Vince!
Hamid Ahmadi introduced Dennis Hall. He said that Dennis is a journalist, author, entrepreneur and works full-time with the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services for victims of violent crime. His presentation, however, is about his give-back to the military for its "Distinguished Visitor Program" that allows active leaders in education, health, and the business community to have the honor of being the Distinguished Visitor of the US aircraft carriers and other US military facilities and institutions."
Dennis started by telling us that he was a student in Professor Hamid Ahmadi’s class 38 years ago and they have become friends. He mentioned that he was born at Mather Air Force Base, growing up in a military family and has always had a respect for the military. In 1987 he was writing Air Force novels and for the last 28 years has become a “Civilian Military Affairs Evangelist” by advocating for the Distinguished Visitor Program. As Hamid mentioned, this pursuit is not his “day job”, he has a career and wife and kids, but his mission is to find people who don’t know about the military and introduce them to the United States military service by allowing people to experience military life and get to know military people, and their service.
Dennis mentioned that he collects a list of people who want to have a “military experience” and facilitates the process of having them to go on trips (at their own expense). Some of these trips have been to take them to missile silos, on reconnaissance flights, see re-fueling of airplanes in the air – having lunch or dinner with the troops. You can visit various military schools such as the U.S.A.F. Academy in Colorado Springs, or meet the Thunderbird pilots. Dennis mentioned other activities such as visiting Coast Guard ships, helicopters, jets and getting to know the Blue Angels or flying on “Fat Albert” – C-130 or go on a U.S. Naval Academy submarine. During “Fleet Week”, you can get on a ship and go to sea for a few hours in their parade of ships. Also you can fly to Hawaii and participate in RIMPAC, the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise) or the Bold Alligator warfare exercise hosted by the U.S. If you are lucky enough to be selected, you travel to your adventure on your own time and money. Hamid mentioned that he has gone to several of these sojourns and had a wonderful time. He said this is a great program which educates people about the military and their great missions of keeping us safe from our enemies but also giving humanitarian aid in times of crises throughout the world on a 24-7 basis.
If you want to have a wonderful “military” adventure, talk to Hamid and email your letter of interest to Dennis Hall and cc Hamid. Below is their email addresses.
President Vicky took delight in letting Dennis know that a book, in honor of his presentation, will be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Library subsidiary)
Dr. Hamid Ahmadi, Mr. Dennis Hall, President Vicky Boatwright, District Governor Ray Ward
What a wonderful day to induct a new member. District Governor Ray Ward was there, poised and ready as were sponsor Walter Malhoski. Frank's best friend Mischele was there also. Frank Pease, our new member must have been excited too, especially because he won the championship for being the longest proposed member-in-waiting in our Club history. Frank has had a starred career up till now (not that he's going down hill). At present he is semi-retired, like most of us. WELCOME FRANK!
It was a good night for a Crab Feed at La Sierra Community Center, Chairman Dick Bauer garnered all of his troops, including Lieutenants David Thorman(Raffle Prizes),Phil & Katha Danz(Cake Auction), Jeff Thompson and Tony Marques (Kitchen), Walter Malhoski (Bar Aficionado), Bill Donnoe (brochure) and many other sub-lieutenants and practically all the members of the Club along with spouses, family members, and friends – enlisting them in the endeavor.
Chairman Bauer (Crab Chair) writes:
“By all accounts last night's crab feed was a resounding success, enjoyed by all of our guests. Thank you everyone for for your hard work and contributions! It really does take a village,…”
We must not forget all the help from others, like 14 members of the Passport Club, the boy scouts who helped with set up, and the Jesuit High School baseball team, whose members served our food so politely and efficiently.
The Sundance Kidprovided his usual energetic and fun music along with being a great MC of the live auction (we seemed to take in pretty good money).
All of us look forward to the final accounting of this very important fund-raiser, which funds most of our charities and projects throughout the year -cross your fingers!
In a poignant moment Assemblyman Ken Cooley presented a resolution to the Club in honor of the passing of Doug Haaland, note the pictures of the eventbelow.
THE RESOLUTION ENDS WITH: “Resolved by Assembly Members Ken Cooley, Kevin Kiley, Melissa A. Mendez, and Marie Waldron that they express their deepest sympathy at the passing of Doug Haaland and, by this resolution, memorialize him for his illustrious record of personal, professional, and civic achievements, as well as the love and devotion he gave to his family and friends.”
SO Now I have conflated two therapy sessions by Dr. Chuckems, psychologist – one for the Crab Feed Assembly on February 4th and for the meeting of February 11th. Hope you like them…

SO we had two losers for February 4th and the 11th,Jay Sedlak and I forget. I don't mean that they are losers in life - just the Raffle and it doesn't matter because there is no money in there anyway....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
