The Carmichael Club held it's first Club Assembly on July 12, 2022. Club planning\for the new Rotary Year was the main topic for discussion. For more information - click on "Read More" below: |
President Olebe led the membership in a discussion what our upcoming year will look like. He asked for opinions and feedback on numerous issues - a lively conversation ensued. Club Service Director Mark Urban presented a survey of members which he recently completed. It is copied below* and David Thorman mentioned and read part of the long range plan which was approved by the incoming board. It is also reproduced below**. |
CARMICHAEL ROTARY PROGRAMMING *This report is the result of telephone conversations and meetings with a variety of Carmichael Rotary members. Most members felt that the club should continue to meet once a week. Most members also believed that speaker programs should be interspersed with other activities.
Members wanted to streamline the meetings. Everyone wanted to retain the pledge, thought, and happy fines. Most wanted to have no more than one cartoon or one joke per meeting. Some wanted to keep the 4- Way Test recitation at each meeting, some wanted to eliminate it entirely, and some wanted to recite it once a month. A couple of members suggested that the President report the main results of the board meeting, especially as it relates to the awarding of grants. Presumably, this would supplement the current requirement in the Bylaws that the board minutes be circulated to all members. No one wanted to continue to have a formal greeter at the meetings at least until there is a significant increase in attendance. Rather, each member would be responsible for greeting any guest or member who has not regularly attended a meeting.
All of the members surveyed favored the use of Zoom to allow absent members to stream meetings as long as it did not interfere with the live meeting. No one favored having a speaker on Zoom when the club was meeting in person. Members did not like all-Zoom meetings. However, they recognized that Zoom should be used in special circumstances such as a presentation from a foreign country. It is unclear whether the members would want to use Zoom as a substitute when the club cannot meet the 15 person minimum at Stage 76.
Members had specific suggestions for speakers, but most of the focus was on the type of speakers members wanted to hear. In general, members wanted a variety of speakers. Several people wanted more focus on community-based speakers such as owners of local businesses and local government agencies. Some members mentioned travel presentations and programs that reflected the Rotary theme for the month.
Members were very supportive of off-site field trips as often as once per month. They had several specific suggestions that may or may not be feasible. There was broad support for visiting local businesses including local ethnic restaurants.
Most members were receptive to the concept of periodic social meetings that would exclude any speaker program, but differed on frequency and structure. Opinions on frequency ran from once a month, to once every two months to only on the fifth Tuesdays of the month. Members were unenthusiastic about having social meetings at Stage 76, but it was unclear what other venues might be better. Some members suggested that the social meetings might include a sing-along or a game night. |
