Soil Born Farms: Chicken Run for Youth Education Garden
George Abraham
Summary: The coup and chickens are a central feature of the youth garden and field trip experience. Students learn about animal care, the roles of animals in the garden, collecting eggs, etc. This interaction with a farm animal is often the first one for most children. Overall, it adds to their experience at Soil Born Farms where over 3000 K-12th grade students visit each year. For more information, click on "Read More"

The project was initially estimated to cost $2000 for all the construction materials: lumber, wire, concrete, fasteners, etc. However, through the generosity of Tim Berry of Berry Lumber who donated most of the materials and Rich Plath who donated the redwood posts, the actual materials cost came to less than $500. Carmichael Rotarians provided the labor with help from the youth garden staff.
Jay Boatwright designed the chicken run based on a sketch from Soil Born Farms. Jay, Rich, Walt and George, with help from Frank, Dick and Tony provided the muscle to build the chicken Taj Mahal which may outlast many other contemporary structures. The project was completed in two weeks for 12 baby chicks anxiously waiting to freely roam the chicken run. It was also featured as the Carmichael Rotary Project for the “People of Action” initiative by Karen Cendro, District Governor, 5180. Pictures Below:
