On October 4th, 2022, 13 members of the Carmichael Rotary Club traveled to Soil Born Farms, 2140 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova. We were met there by Shawn Harrison, Founder and co-director of the Soil Born Farms. He led us on a tour of the farms and told us about it's fascinating history and development....for more information - click on "Read More below..

Shawn Harrison started the tour by giving us a short history of the Soil Born Farms, saying the area comprising the farms was part of a gigantic hacienda and through the years has been paired down to the 55 acres that it is now. When Shawn took it over in year 2000, it was not a working farm and was in disarray. Slowly, over the years, the farm has been improved and is producing food and educating prospective farmers, youth, and the community about how food is produced and the healthfulness of fresh organic food.
Soil Born Farms have a weekly online marketplace where you can order produce and pick it up on Saturday. The farm produces it’s own compost by using goats, sheep and chickens to eat the grass and then by covering fields with special tarps and allowing decomposition to occur. Their produce is organic and healthy.
SBF have many educational classes, and social events such as their upcoming “Halloween at the Farm” event on October 29th.
After a two hour tour, we gathered in the courtyard of their restaurant and had sandwiches and wine artfully provided by Richard Plath – the event organizer. The farm functions with the work of a few staff and many volunteers including our own George Abraham who volunteers there every Saturday.
A wealth of information about the farms can be had online: https://soilborn.org
You can even find their interesting “Theme Song” there where the prominent line is
“I eat so heavy and I never get fat”
