Julia Luna will compete at our District Conference!
Julia Luna (third from right) with family just after winning the semi-final speech contest
It was a sweet night, Tuesday, March 27th at the Crocker Riverside Elementary School, for Julia, her family, teacher Shannon , the Victory Christian High School and for the Carmichael Club. It was a great end of a beautiful spring day. Rotarians Phil Danz and George Abraham (co-chairs of the Speech contest for the Carmichael Club ) were ecstatic to be there. There were four Club winner's participating and ALL were excellent in their presentations. The District put on a good contest - very well done and efficient. Among the notables there were District Governor, Sandi Sava, District Speech Chair Patrick Hassna, and our own favorite Assistant Governor Desiree Wilson. Julia was rewearded $250 for her efforts. From Jay Sedlak's notes " After we finished eating - nice hamburger and fries - I noticed a strange person over by the door by the wash rooms. Looked like a someone praying at first. Looked like a sheik of some sort. Then Karen Munsterman got up to tell us that Alan Gallaway was not going to be able to give his program, but he found a replacement."
Then, a "Alan look alike" in a "shiek's robe" gave the following talk:
I booked this trip with Gate 1 Travel. I'd always wanted to go to Dubai and they had this trip at a reasonable price. I flew from SFO to Dubai on Emirates airlines. The plane was an Airbus 380, which holds 525 passengers and has a total area on two levels 40 percent greater than a 747. The flight took 15 hours with a 12 hour time change. The plane flew right over the north pole and Moscow, instead of over Europe, a distance of about 8400 miles.
The United Arab Emirates is comprised of 7 emirates, like states, and have an area of about 30000 sq mi, or about the size of So Carolina. See map. The population was 600000 in 1960 and is now about 9,5 million. Only about 1 mil are emirates with the rest coming from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other impoverished countries.
First day we toured Dubai, stopping to see the world famous hotel, which looks like a big sail, Burj al Arab. The Royal Suite goes for 24k per night. Then we stopperd at the Dubai Mall, with 6200 stores and 1200 places to eat. The Mall was close to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world After lunch we went to the Dubai Museum , which showed how Dubai used to be a small village of pear divers. Oil wasn’t discovered in the UAE until the 60’s.
The second day we had the morning free, so I took the subway to the Mall of the Emirates to see for myself where the famous indoor skiing was. In the afternoon, we went to the sand dunes in 4 wheel drive vehicles and did sand dune roller coaster riding. Then to an outdoor Bedoouin dinner with camel rides and falcon holding.
The third day included a trip to Sharza, the third emirate we visited. The city is a short distance from Dubai and is much cheaper to live in. About 1 mil people commute to Dubai from Sharza to work, including our Indian guide, Shalini. Tlhis is where I bought this outfit, for 90 Surhams. The best deal I could get in Dubai was 140. The final day we went to Abu Dhabi. The architecture was amazing here also. One building looked like a giant coin. The biggest sight here was the Sheikh el Zayed Grand Mosque. It was started in 1996 and finished in 2008. Zayed died in 2004. We have no idea how much it cost because the Sheikh used his own money to make it, and no expense was spared. When we got back from Dubai, we had a final dinner cruise, and I flew home the next day.
S ince Vicky Boatwright was not in attendance, ancient Finemaster Chuck McBride enjoyed eliciting voluntary contributions from the assemblage: Vince Iosso got a new significant other - which was news to him - a new dog; Jay Sedlak sacrificed some of his hard earned money in the hopes that the Cubs will win another world series; Mark Urban had a birthday!; Troy Drennon came back from vacation to the Caymen Islands; Stan Roe is proud that Michigan is in the final four; Jay Sedlak who was taking notes said that Doug Haaland said something he could't hear, but he thinks it was complimentary to Jane.

During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
rboegel@saclibrary.org
As of October, 2017, we have purchased over 120 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
