As the Rotary World turns, a whole new leadership begins all throughout Rotary, from top to bottom on July 1st of every year - an amazing feat! This year we have Rotary International President Holger Knaack of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Molin, Germany - the first German R.I. president ever; Brent Hastey of the Rotary Club of SouthYuba County Sunrise is our new District Governor for District 5180; What is significant for our Club of Carmichael, is that David Thorman, one of our most stalwart members, is our new president for the third time (having been president for one full term, 2013-4, and the 1st quarter term in the year of the famous quartet of Past Presidents (Stan Roe, Vince Iosso, and Jay Boatwright, circa 2015-6. Dave has the distinction of not only following Vicky Boatwright, the first woman president but also being the oldest sitting president in Carmichael's long history. The Rotary International theme for this year is "Rotary Opens Opportunities" and the District's theme is "FFF'n Amazing" where the "F's" stand for Family, Friendship, Foundation.
Details of each of these individuals can be found by clicking on "Read More", bottom right.
So it came to pass that President David Thormanopened the 3rd "virtual" meeting, last of July (New Leadership Month) of the new 2020-2021 year. The "pledge" and "thought" was volunteered by your esteemed Bulletin Editor Phil Danz who gave the following thought.
"The Superior man is modest in his speech
but exceeds in his actions"

FUTURE PROGRAMS

It was too bad that we did not have Past District Governor Brian Moore, wine expert and purveyor of fine wines, in person with us (instead of virtually) – for I know he would have brought a few bottles of wine with him and shared them with us. For those in the know, Brian is a good person to sit next to or near (at the District Conference, crab feed, or other Rotary event because he always brings along a few bottles from his large collection and shares them. Brian earned his living as a civil engineer, but his passion for wine has been so pervasive and he has been so generous over the years, even when he brought various wines for some of us to sample for Mo and Chuck McBride's wedding so many years ago. Brian has made his mark in the wine world in many ways but is especially known as a consummate wine judge for over 3 decades at the California State Fair.
Brian gave a very informative slide show about wine, asking us to answer trivia questions, and telling us about the wine habits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. Then he took us through a number of surprising “True or False” questions – I learned, for instance, that Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape varietal in the world.
Brian's information was too extensive to be shown in it's entirety in this bulletin.
He went on to debunk the myth that “sulfite’s cause headaches” when used in wine, and explained how wines are rated (as Gold, Silver and Bronze). We learned that wine bottles have European names like Rhine, Bordeaux, and Bergundy - no American names and that the wine industry generates 325,000 jobs in California. Brian also talked about the Whistler Tree in Portugal and the controversy of which is best - the cork or the screw cap.
Towards the end, he gave ten reasons why wine is good for your health.
It can help to lower cholesterol
Reduce risk of heart attack
Reduce risk of colon cancer
Good for brain health
Contains anti-inflammatory properties
Reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s
Can help boost immunity
It helps harden enamel and prevent tooth decay
It is rich in antioxidants
Full of probiotics
I am so glad I drink wine!
After answering many questions from our inquisitive members, President David dutifully informed Brian that a book, in honor of his presentation, will be presented to the Carmichael Library (perhaps a book about wine), subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
